You didn't, it is debris remember. Has nothing to do with oil, bad bearings, materials or design. Or so I hear.

Most of them are controlled by brake pressure to an extent. Heck even the Renaults, Dacias and Alpha's I rented in Europe were the same. Some were more intrusive than others.

I don't care one way or another if they warranty this guys engine or not, I was just pointing out that it very well could be a quickie lubes fault for not putting enough oil back in the engine or something else, since they were the last people to touch the oiling system for the vehicle and now it has an issue caused by oiling.

I would probably start there and not assume that they performed a proper oil change, based on my experience with these types of businesses. I do agree that the Toyota dealer was wrong telling the guy that most of the engines fail within 10K.

I have searched this thread for the answer and the inter-web but come up with little or nothing. I called the dealer and they referred me to corporate. They said my vin is on the list but that was all they could tell me. If someone here could share with me the way to determine what phase I'm in for the recall that would be fantastic. Build date was 5/22/2022.
    TIA

Did you get a letter last summer? You will get another letter when your phase is on. I am in the 1st phase and received the letter just after Christmas. See what your App says as well.

Thrown your VIN in here also https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls?gclsr...MIs5z_-7uRiwMVB9XCBB2tjRchEAAYASAAEgJ3d_D_BwE

Narrator: there was in fact not more to the story…

Happy ending for the owner. Good on Toyota corporate for not siding with the lying dealer. Beware Peter Boulware Toyota in Tallahassee, FL.

Never heard of the seatbelt trick. Mine works terribly. Shuts the engine off about every 4 times I put it in park just to restart when I take my foot off the break. Takes extremely little brake pressure to do so. I have the auto engine stop delete ready to instal.

I used to pull into my garage, put it in park, take off my seatbelt and then shut it off. It would stop sometimes as soon as I put it in park and restart as soon as I undid the seatbelt. Figured out if you just click the seatbelt before shifting to park the problem disappears.

I think there's a setting that adjusts the sensitivity of brake pressure that activates the engine stop.

I just hit the “A” button every time I start the engine, so I don’t have to deal with that ridiculous feature. Wish I could turn it off permanently without buying some gadget to disable it.

Posted earlier, cut off a zip tie, and it will hold the off button in so no need to press every time. A little Red Green (Canadian reference) but works

Auto start stop is inconvenient on gas engines. No doubt. I’ve bitched about it plenty over the years.

There are no concerns on reliability. I’ve spent a lot of time on that topic.

Hybrids don’t have issues since you run on the battery. Frankly, I think everything is heading towards hybrids and the auto start stop issue will fade into history.

Better yet download the Toyota app and look at health status for recall notice and details assigned to your truck, issues solved

Tim, I was under the impression that GMs lifter issues were related to start/stop. Are you saying data suggests that star/stop doesn't affect reliability?

No. That’s a myth. Lifter failure was/is a supplier issue.

Jam it between the button and the dash, holds the button in the off position. Or buy the dongle and or software to do it.

I think that's true up to a point (that point being pre-1990s or thereabouts). But is there really any evidence to indicate today's average vehicle breaks down less than say an average vehicle in 2005?

I personally think late 90s to early 2010s (or so) was a high watermark for reliable vehicles that a shade tree mechanic could repair most anything on.

The only firm I know collecting data on problems per vehicles which would relate to vehicle break downs is JD Power. I found a 2005 chart and the 2024 chart. It clearly shows the average number of problems has dropped.

Thanks, that's what I figured. It's a little redneck, but effective, I guess.

I think I'll stick with just hitting the button after startup. It's become second nature.

The devil lies in the details of what those "problems" are defined as, their impact on operation and long term reliability and the costs in time and money to fix them. That kind of real data is not easy to come by.

I agree completely. An argument could however be made that vehicles have gotten significantly more complex and has a lot more tech, which can and will cause additional issues, without impacting the mechanical operation of the vehicle. So if the total amount of “problems” decreased, even with more systems involved, then the factors relating to reliability would have to have decreased.

The one I like is Dashboard Light (formerly the Long Term Quality Index). They follow only drivetrain reliability over the long term. Every manufacturer has their own internal service life targets for parts. The real story here IMO is the trends that emerge after standard factory warranties end.

It’s also free, and the guys running it don’t make any money, so data dumps are large and sporadic.

Fair enough. I've always been under the impression that JD Power is basically bought and paid for by the manufacturers though. Any validity to that? Who is paying JD Power to collect & monitor this data?
