Hey I was wondering if anyone had to deal with the trunk door (tailgate) not unlocking when pressing the unlock button in the truck or on the key fob? It worked before but all of a sudden, it stopped working. I have to always use my key to stick in the hole and turn now? I have a '17 tundra platinum crewcab 5.7L. thanks again. I looked on search but couldn't find anything, apologies if this has already been answered. I'm a first time truck owner

Lots of confusing info here. 27 Tundra?? Trunk door? what exactly are you asking? Tailgate? Campershell or Hard tonneau lid?

The tailgate doesn't unlock with the fob unless someone added the pop-n-lock assembly at some point.

He said it used to work and stopped working. Just not 100% what isn't unlocking. Guessing the tailgate handle.

It's quite obvious that he's writing from the future about his 2027 3rd row Tundra. I'm pretty sure they have optional trunks.

That's the bed length. The year is 2027. The Tundra engine is 2-cylinder Honda lawn mower engine to charge the electric drivetrain battery. Nobody politically affiliated just stole your natural gas stove. The country descends into chaos.

For certain! The two love interest protagonists meet at the fuel-hybrid recharging station while trying to calculate the proper oil-fuel mixture for the Honda ICE but the girl's unknowningly had an MTD replacement swapped in and the carb is malfunctioning, gasp

Mine does… no pop-n-lock. Came off the lot with the tailgate connected to power door locks…and fob.

Hey my apologies, it's a 2017 tundra. The tailgate sir. Clicking the unlock button in the truck and on the key fob won't unlock my tailgate and I have to stick my key and turn to unlock it. Before I didn't? I'm not sure maybe cause it was unlocked already but I was wondering if there is something I need to do? My apologies again on the quick messaging, I'll proof read it next time so I don't confuse anyone.

@RainMan_PNW , any ideas? I haven’t hooked up my auto locking tailgate yet. Loose wire or fuse?

Sure you had one before? They’re not a factory option, but could’ve been added after. Did it used to make a big clunk sound? Does it still make the sound?

Good crew here just having fun with you.
I have a 2017 and as far as I know they didn’t come with a factory auto tailgate (trunk) lock. I added a pop n lock one, very easy ant took about 45 minutes. I highly recommend adding one as a stolen tailgate is expensive to replace.
Welcome to the forum and sorry about all the $ you’re about to spend on stuff you didn’t know you needed.

Yes sir, whenever I click the unlock button, it makes a clunk sound in the tailgate. And it still makes a sound but it doesn't unlock? Maybe something got loose?

There's 8 or so Torx screws on the top half of the 'inner skin' of the tailgate... Remove those screws and you'll be able to see what's going on, connected, or broke inside of there. If it's 'clunking' when you unlock, then it's telling you that it has signal and power.... This means the hard part of tracking down a connection, etc. that came loose is probably not necessary. So, now you just need to figure out where the breakdown is mechanically...

A quick youtube search should produce a couple of video that shows what the "guts" should look like when it's all connected properly.

    Good luck!

The assembly for the power lock is quite simple. Just an actuator that pushes the lock mechanism up and down. Like some have said take the tailgate plate off and see what it does when you press the button

Mine stopped working too. I get a lot of dust in there from wheeling. The mechanism was all gunked up with dirt. Just cleaned it up and put some grease on it and was like new again. Hopefully yours will be an easy fix too. Could be frozen too if you’re in cold weather.

    Hilarious thread!

I installed a pop n’ lock on my 18 the first year I owned it.

Maybe a year ago, I’d hit the button and hear the -clunk- but the lock would not disengage. I ended up pulling the plate and I either lubed the actuator or slightly adjusted the positioning of the actuator and it has worked fine ever since. Pull the plate and use your fob to lock/unlock, and it should be obvious. The actuator may just be a little dried out and sticky.
