Truck used to sound like a diesel, then Seafoam in the oil fixed it?

When I bought my 2020 Limited Tundra from CarMax 2 years ago, I paid $800 to have it relocated from Florida to Wisconsin, because it was priced much lower than other Tundra's I had seen. It had 105k miles on it. When I went to pick it up, I was a little put off because the 5.7 was louder than expected from the motor during idle. Sounded a little like a diesel motor. Even though the inside of the truck looked like it was used by a construction company, I felt committed after shelling out $800 to get the truck moved, so I bought it.

Oil changes did not help the engine sound (I have 125K miles on it now). I had been researching and saw where some had changed from 0w-20 to 5w-30 and that quieted down some of the motor "noise". I decided to make this, but before doing the oil change, I tried throwing in 8 ounces of Seafoam into the crank case. After 200 miles, the motor is quiet and seems to run more smooth at idle.

Should I still go to 5w-30 or stay with 0w-20?

5w30 is what quiet down these motors. Stick with that. You will be fine.

Coming from a 19 tacoma, Im a little over 2 weeks with my 20 tundra and I feel the same. Sounds like a diesel compared to how quite the tacoma ran. Glad I'm not the only one, considering it only has 67k on it. Im sitting here like this bitch better not start getting louder with a knock

You drained the Seafoam, right? The only recommend having it in the oil for 100 or so miles, their directions state to add it before you do an oil change.

I threw the Seafoam in my truck before my last change and was surprised by how much darker my oil was compared to my previous change. This was only last month so I haven't done another oil change yet, so I can't say if my oil is now "cleaner" than before or not. Just wanted to point out that you aren't supposed to go the 5k miles with the Seafoam in the oil.

I didn't have issues with how mine sounded, I was just at 70k and wanted clean the system more then just doing a normal oil change and I feel like it did what I was hoping.

Good luck to you. Lots of folks here like the 5W-30

    Too many, but not enough....
5w30 definitely quieted my engine down. I switched around 1500 miles after buying new. Still quiet and going strong.

A theory on the diesel sound is the timing chain tensioner moving around with the thin 0w-20 but the thicker oil keeps it from moving. The thinner oil was Toyota’s attempt to squeeze out some extra MPG. I would rather the engine run better

Amsoil has a product that you add to the oil and let the engine idle for about 15 minutes than do the oil change. It’s supposed to be the same detergents they put in the Signature Series oil just in a more concentrated form

Folks state “quieted” my motor down changing to 5W30?

Has anyone used a Sound Pressure Level (SPL) meter to test the actual changes in measured acoustic volume?

Its a noticeable enough change for most of us that is beyond doubt that its significant.

My 2019 has 63,000 miles and have ran 0w20 since the first mile. I haven’t tested this, but I haven’t heard a noticeable difference in engine clatter. If I do, I’d be happy to test this in the future.

5w20 is a recommended weight for hot climates if i'm not mistaken, that's what I use.

Anyone has used 0W-30? German Castrol 0W-30 used to be my go to when i used to have a WRX. Good for startup in cold weather and runs 30 when engine is warm.
