Could be bad vvti cam gear. When they start to go they can clack just like rod knock. Question is can a vvti sensor shutdown the motor? It will likely be an easy diag for Longo, if no codes they will pull valve covers and then if nothing is found they will scope it.

5.7s are in the used parts network for a decent price so it shouldnt get too crazy expensive.

Could be a rod bearing, but the truck shut down. If it was a rod than I would think at those speeds the bottom of the engine would have a new vent in it and oil would be everywhere. Without being able to see or hear it then we could make all kinds of comments on what it could be. But I’m hoping that it’s something simple so you aren’t looking at a $5000 plus bill.

That's what I was thinking, unless the connecting rod snapped while on up stroke and just mated the piston to the head.

I have seen them fail in almost all models of vvti motors by 50k usually due to lack of oil changes. Toyota has done multiple TSBs on the smaller car motors for vvti gear replacements due to locking in advance and clacking. The hydraulic holes are so small that vvti issues are usually the first system to fail. They introduced removable vvti screens but now those just plug up and starve the front cam journal of oil.

Did you check to see if this tsb for vvti has been performed on your truck?

If it started but was noisy, could it be that only half the engine was running? I’m just trying to figure out why it shut down. I hope your problem is more electrical over mechanical. I personally have not seen an engine that broke a rod at somewhere in the neighborhood of 2000 rpm and just died. Quietly.

Toyota called. They said fuel sending unit failed. They cant replicate the noises. Will investigate after work.

Well they can't replicate the noise because it won't run. Well see what happens after the new unit gets dropped in

Don't give up on that beast yet, prolly just had a bad day and she will give you many more years of good service. Hopefully it won't come at a hefty price due to crappy maintenance on the POs part.

Fuel pump is 100% dead. But I had a very chaotic metal on metal sound when attempting to restart the truck. Which they cannot replicate because, as stated, fuel pump and sending unit are junk. So once the unit is replaced well know of any further potential issues

That’s odd. So fuel sending unit as in the fuel gauge/level unit that’s inside the tank? I remember the older cars would just show empty on the cluster gauge if one of those went out. Weird that something like that would cause the whole truck to shut off.

Either way, thanks for the update. Still very curious to know what else they say.

Oh, so both the pump and fuel gauge sending unit are dead? That makes more sense if the pump also died.

Wondering what made both go bad? As for the noises, I think the other suggestion about the injectors going dry sounds plausible, but who knows? You said it sounded like metal clacking. Not sure if dry injectors would make that sound. Hopefully the tech will figure it out once the truck is running again.

So picked up the truck. Runs fine. Bad pump and bad sending unit. Service tech couldnt get any replication of what I heard. Now I'm second guessing myself and wonder if it was something else completely unrelated.

Regardless big props to Longo Toyota for not only getting it done in one day but helping me out with the price. Wanted to charge $984 for everything and 5.5hrs of labor, knocked it down to 2.5hrs as a good faith move. This is my 6th Toyota and 5th Toyota truck and the first issue I've ever had with any Toyota vehicle.

Glad it worked out. Funny how our minds go to the most expensive and extreme thoughts for what is wrong. I had a noise in my 80 series Land Cruiser that I heard through the oil pan and thought it was a crank bearing going out. Turned out to be the AC tensioner pulley dying.

Could have been worse. I think the fuel pump and sending unit are just one combined unit. As for the noise, it could have been pre-ignition from a lean condition. As the pressure dropped in the fuel line the injectors were putting less fuel into the cylinders. Just a guess but hopefully all is well now.

Congrats. For a 2010, that's a great result, and Toyota did right by you. After hearing all the strange noises and experiencing surprising symptoms on shutdown, a newby convert from Ford would have been ready to throw Yoda under the bus. ;)

Having had a fuel pump die while driving...the engine can make some real shitty noises when its as @Dr_Al mentioned running on low fuel pressure.

Thanks again peeps. Definitely a strange situation that I'm glad worked out. I did have mechanical breakdown insurance through mercury that I purchased because I didnt trust this 3rd party dealer, and man did it work out. I will always be a Toyota fan and this didnt sway me at all. Just an odd situation I guess. The noises tripped me out for sure. I had a Silverado that had a pump fail and it just shut down, no noises or anything, so this didnt come to mind
