................actually it is 5 gallons not 8, unless not all years have the same reserve capacity, anyway it's a truck & trucks are workhorses not go to the mall experiences. I take down trees for firewood on my property in some of the most godawful conditions you can imagine. Since I bought my '16 Limited I've had to utilize it to pull down two 80' trees that would otherwise have been hung up on each other for 5 or 10 years, I couldn't do this with the Taco.

280AI, hey, you're gonna get called a troll if you come to a Tundra forum and spew negativity. Just ask the damn question. There's no reason to get everyone up in arms. I promise insulting members intelligence wont help either. In fact, it's against the code of conduct which could ban you. JUST SAYIN!

As for your fuel economy this isn't just a Tundra thing. Just about every car with available distance and consumption computer functions is wrong. The idea behind the tool was based on approximations from many data points.

Check out the following articles, perhaps they might be able to shed light on this particular issue for you.

My tank "reserve' is definitely 6 gallons on my 07. As mentioned, indicated mileage is a reference only. My indicated mileage pretty much stays near 11.3. For the last year and then some. I know I get as much as 15 or more average when I go to my property. I just don't worry about it at all. Ever. It's a big truck. Gas is cheap.

I made a legit post abut the difference in indicated vs actual and get called a troll. Heaven forbid you make a negative post about a truck you own

I know my 2014.5 Camry SE Sport i took to Germany got right around the same indicated vs actual. So why can Toyota get that right but the Tundra is so far off every tank? If they can do it for one, why not the other? Unless it's intentional

    Well I didn't call you a troll.

Anyhow, a V8 will have more cylinder variance than a 4 or 6 cylinder. When only 1 cylinder is being monitored this allows more room for error on the other cylinders when more cylinders are present. If cylinder 1 uses the least amount of fuel, there will be a significant variance on a V8. On a 4 cylinder, this won't be as noticeable.

Also, if cylinder 1 fuel injector is leaking, the ECM will shorten the pulse to compensate and correct the Air/Fuel ratio. The average fuel economy will pick that up as the vehicle is not using much fuel because the pulse is shortened. This is just another example of what could be going on.

Once again, Toyota does not even remotely claim this is accurate. It specifically states to use this as a reference. This is noted on Page 91 of the 2016 Tundra Owner's Manual.

Hi, I'm not complaining about the gas mileage. I'm just wondering why the onboard computer it's so off. When other people are within +/- 0.5. Mine is off by 5 mi per gal. I just wanted to figure out if there something wrong with the sensors without taking it in to the dealership and get charge $120/hr for diagnosing.

If you don't have a check engine light then there aren't any sensors malfunctioning. Based on the system description, your transmission speed sensor would have to be bad or cylinder 1 would have to be misfiring for the inputs to the cluster to be incorrect/malfunctioning.

It is just an estimate, not actual fuel mileage.

    OP made 2 comments:
First, that the tundra is the worst rated truck.
I asked by who? This is a troll comment if not supported.
Second, he implies that Toyota is indulging in deceptive practices because his mathematical skills differ from the on board computer. Again, clearly another troll comment.
Then, rather than attempt to support or justify either point he indulged in juvenile and childish attacks. Pretty impressive!

I like to think I've got a pretty good handle on how Toyota does business. They are one of the cleanest companies I've had the pleasure of working for.

cdkenne, at one place I worked we were acquainted with business management practices called lean thinking that I understand originated with Toyota. Are you familiar with this and was it part of your training at Toyota?

You can try resetting the MPG estimate display, just press and hold for a few seconds the "DISP" button in your steering wheel until your screen reset. I do it always when refueling my truck.

I don't recall the terminology but it was likely part of the online courses I took when I started.

A lot of Toyota's core beliefs and sayings are in Japanese, so you'll have to excuse me if I don't recall them, or their translations.

I posted a long list of my comparison between gauge and calculation over a 2 year period on another thread. Search MPG and you might find it.
