We all do dumb stuff sometimes. Keep your head up. Most don’t come back and explain what happened when they figure out it was some dumb mistake. We all make them. Thanks for sharing and don’t be afraid to get back in there. You identified all the areas you knew were suspicious and know what not to do next time.

It's not something I would willingly subject myself to by starting my own thread to warn people, because ultimately someone would be like "IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING, DON'T DO IT!" And I tend to follow that line of thinking most of the time, unless the chance of disaster is minimal, because that's an opportunity to learn something new.

But I know how to change oil, so I knew the source of the folly was something other than lack of experience. It was a recipe of things within my control that I allowed to dictate the situation because I wasn't being present.

I also think the average age around here is a good bit higher than somewhere like Tacomaworld, where I definitely probably wouldn't have shared..lol

I had a lot of helpful replies here and felt I owed an answer and to share the positive aspect of it. And as I said before, I don't embarrass easily. I really appreciate people not beating me up over it, but I spent plenty of time beating myself up regardless. :)

I just read this entire thread. You sir, have just taught a whole bunch of us about how easy it can be to make the mistake of draining the trans instead of the engine. You may have just taught many, including me, to research the oil change job and know for sure which is the oil drain plug. For example the trans has a allen wrench hole and the engine uses a hex bolt, about 14mm I'd guess. For everyone considering buying a Tundra, including me in the next few months, we need to know this, thanks for this thread. A person can put some Gorilla tape over the trans plug as a reminder too.

What did they charge $600 for!?! I mean 4qts of WS and an oil change, how does that equal $600?

I’m sure there were some diagnostic fees thrown in.
