The problem I have with extended warranties, is the fine print they never tell you about. You find out you're not covered when you try to use the warranty a couple years later. It seems to always be a fight to use the warranty, as the dealer or warranty company try to deny you coverage in the hopes you just go away, which a lot of people do.

Toyota factory warranty t&c seems to be pretty straight forward, unless you start modding

I took my truck in with less than 1000 miles because the tailgate wasn't opening right. They looked left and right at every possible reason not to fix it. They asked if I tried to fix the latch myself, they looked in the bed trying to find evidence that I over loaded it and were interrogating me if I put excessive weight on the tail gate. Ridiculous. The truck was brand new with not a scratch in the bed. Not straight forward has been my experience. I like their catch-all phrase "unable to duplicate problem".

Have a buddy that works at a Toyota dealership. He said the Toyota extended service contract is the best he has seen. His dealership will file a claim saying "IN OP" and they will accept the claim every time. Someone broke their side mirror on their garage door. Made the claim stating "IN OP" and the customer is getting a new mirror. I guess just depends on the dealership.

Unfortunately it's an example of a very bad dealership... Many people on this forum are getting decent service from dealers when truck is covered by warranty.

I must have bad luck or my area has the worst Toyota dealers. San Jose, Fremont, Milpitas California area. I've stopped going to 3 dealers because of bad service. One wanted to do a $1900 valve job on my 4Runner because it was misfiring. A hole-in-the-wall auto shop replaced a clogged injector for $150 and it ran perfect. Another dealer said my Sienna needed an air filter change when I took it in for an oil change. I had changed it 1 week prior. This latest dealership gave me such a hard time for the tailgate, making me make 2 trips just so they could loosen the latch and tighten it again, which solved the problem. I could go on, but I won't bore you with the details.

Lol... Milpitas... The sales manager told me to go home and educate myself about the current car market when I didn't want to negotiate his $10k over msrp markup for a limited back in mid 2022... Those guys are crooks.

Luckily you have a lot more dealerships around your area to try. My San Francisco Toyota dealer is pretty decent, although although nobody is perfect

Yes Milpitas is my #1 choice for bad dealerships. All the way from sales to service. Service tried to sell me unnecessary services and sales lie like a bunch of biatches.

Toyota sunnyvale was the only one in south bay who told me that they don't do markups and if I wanted a TRD Pro I would have to put my deposit and wait in line behind 20 other bookings.

And a dealership wouldn't ever lie about not being able to get you a vehicle in order to keep you around in hopes of wearing you down to sell you something else... never.

I just paid $4700 under MSRP for a 2023 Limited in Washington this past weekend. We live in Oregon, it was worth the drive even if you live in California. Just reducing your sales tax for California by the difference in MSRP would cover your gas on the trip home.

End of the quarter deals, dealers are trying to push 2023 models out to make room for 2024s... Plus sales are definitely down due to higher interest rates

I understood you get taxed based on the address you register it. That's what they do at all CA dealers.

If it has been, I'd consider trading my '23 for a '24.

    Yes.

I'm saying if you can't find a dealer in CA to give you the truck under MSPR, the tax savings just on the $4700 off would be ~$350 @ 7.5% tax rate, that would cover your gas to drive back.

Fortunatly, OR doesn't have sales tax, and while Washington does they don't charge it for those purchasing outside the state (which is not true of purchasing a vehicle in CA as an Oregon resident).

I did have to call a few dealers in my area to find one that would sell a 24’ at MSRP. As I said before Toyota of Carlsbad told me they only sell cars/trucks at MSRP now. I guess the days of buying a truck at $500 over invoice is long gone but I was just happy to not pay some stupid dealer markup.

I will say it made the purchasing process very simple. They told me over the phone the out the door price (MSRP+tax). I showed up, wrote a check and was driving away in the new truck in under 1hr… extremely painless.

Just wanted to clarify your post as it's still a little bit confusing -

You'll still end up paying full CA sales tax when you go to the dmv to register your new truck at your CA address

100% correct, that is between you and California Tax board. But the selling dealership outside of the state is usually is not going to charge you their sales tax, for Washington in this example.

They had two there. I purchased a platinum because I couldn’t stand the camo stuff on the PRO. I also planned to do Kings and wheels/tires so the platinum was a better choice for me as the interior is much nicer.

Yes, black color is hardest to sell because many people don't like it - hard to keep it clean, probably warms up more on the sun, and less visible at night. So black color cars are often more discounted

So, you don't save a penny on taxes if you buy out of state, like you suggested.
