Seems like I was correct that the TRD CAI is pretty much for looks which is OK. Not much more air flow to make it worth it. I will back track my statement that I would "maybe" spend up to $200. ..............Back to $0, not even $75. Use your money for for a great nite out with your kids/girl friend/wife. Better spent.

there was a thread on the forum where pretty much if you get the TRD air filter + the oversized connector you make your own TRD CAI for like 75 bux top.

I remember that now. I think there was a part# for that TRD inlet piece too. I bet @Roman can get it too. Totally forgot about that. We need to bump that.

I believe it's a new TRD style box air inlet to replace the OEM box air inlet for better air flow. I know I've seen it it somewhere. It may not even be a Toyota part.

There is a red, accordion like hose that connects directly to the TRD air box. Is that the one you're referring to?

No not referring to that hose, The one I'm thinking about is the air inlet that is located between air box and the fender well. This new air inlet is supposedly designed for better air flow using the existing air box. I'll try to find a pic of what I'm talking about during my lunch break. I'm pretty sure it was a non Toyota sourced part.

Not sure that it actually did anything, but the sound of the air intake changed a little after I installed it.

That's it. I knew I saw it here. Sorry about that Gary. Do you have the part# for that? If I recall it's supposed to improve air flow. More cold outside air can't hurt. Bottom line...Would you do this mod again?

Absolutely. It brings the stock box one step closer to the trd setup. And I think it was relatively inexpensive. I don't have the part number anymore though. It looks like the s&b uses the same design on this part if that says anything to you. I'm sure it smooths out the air intake at the fender. I heard more of a gulp of air after it was installed.

Thanks for that info Beast. The following is for the un-initiated: The TRD drop in is a wet filter. Just like the K&N. For those watching this thread..... Imagine a very good dry filter being a spider web, a spider web with nano inch spacing. Blocks a lot of dust particles. Add a little oil to that web. Restricts even more air particles. Obviously you don't want to use too much filter oil. Defeats the purpose. This is not rocket science by the way. If you read (RTFM) the f***king manual for a wet filter, you are good to go. "Oh, I may accidentally use too much and frack up my MAF". Only if you are a lame brain. Thin film......as in thin, sparse, a little. Give me a freaking break. This is not a hand holding lesson. Gary made a good point, this simple part that replaces the OEM inlet duct/pipe gives you some more COLD, (cooler), air flow from the "outside". Will it make you "King of the Hammers"?,No.............But a hell of a lot better than spending hard earned $ on an aftermarket "hot air intake" like the AFE for example. Aftermarket CAI's aren't the #1 scam. #1 scam is a throttle body spacer. Might as well torch your $. Better thrill than the total disappointment you will get from the throttle body spacer. I never rant here, never.

Imo, you are better off going with a K&N and call it good.

    Cold air intake, premium sound
I swapped my stock out for a K&N cold air intake three months ago. Our environment is pretty hot in traffic and out on the beach area. It sounds more peppy and my mileage has improved by 1 mile per gallon. This will be my second swap. I found it very helpful on my 2nd gen Tundra 2wd. This 4x4 is a guzzler but I dig it. My last K&N made it 112k mi. 2 filter cleanings.

Old thread but I would say no. Not worth the cash. K&N air filter with Toyota air accelerator does the same thing and a lot cheaper. My 2 cents.

Well folks, my TRD air box came in and I managed to get it installed with 200 miles on the new truck!!!

I made it work with the stock intake piping, and already have the TRD air accelerator in place along with the TRD drop in panel filter.

Did you have any issues with it fitting with the stock intake tube? Is the outlet on the TRD box in the same location as stock? I was hoping to find some pictures of the TRD and stock side by side to see differences. I heard the TRD is taller but wasn’t sure it the outlet is still the same spot.

The diameter on the TRD upper lid is slightly larger than the OEM one, and it was a bit tricky to slip on but with some patience you could get it on. The rubber coupling is flexible and can expand a bit to slip over the piping on the TRD lid. The outlet position is similar to the stock lid, fits fine and looks like it came that way from the factory, which was an important thing for me. I'm happy with it
