I worked offshore in Brazil for 7 years.
1) When you get to the airport, DON'T use the money exchange counters. They will rape you on the exchange rate. Instead when you exit the baggage claim and go through customs, right outside will be some guys wearing RED/MAROON Vests, they are supposed to help you with "Taxi's", but ask them if they will exchange money. Most of them will, for a much better price. But don't exchange all your money there, just some of it. Then at the hotel they will give you a decent exchange rate to. But chances are you are going to want to get something before you get to the hotel. i.e. drinks, food, mementos.....
2) Don't ever where a ball cap under any circumstance, they will know you are American right off the bat. Try to where a button up shirt and leather shoes, they will think you are European. That will help smooth things over some.
3) Don't buy the fake stories from the shoe shine boys roaming the outside (and sometimes inside) of the airport. They have been there for years trying to scam money from unsuspecting tourists, and they got it down to an art. Don't even shake their hands. That is how they know your weak to them pulling your heart strings. They may linger around you for a little bit, just ignore them, they will eventually find another victim.
4) When getting a Taxi, don't go the first one. Find a group of drivers standing around their taxis and try to haggle a price, they will underbid each other to get you business.
5) If it is to good to be true, It probably is.
6) Find a phone case that has a spot you can connect a lanyard. Then tie it to your hand. These guys will take your phone right out from you, and they can run faster than Hussein Bolt from Jamaica.
7) Carry your belongings in your front pockets. Never put anything in your chest pocket or back pockets. Find a pair of shorts or pants that have deep front pockets.
8) Get a travel bag you can lock very securely.
9) Use the safe in your hotel room. I know you cant fit everything in that safe (Because they are small), that is when your refer to suggestion #8.
10) Don't get a room with a balcony, all that is, is a back door for someone to scale the side of the building and get into your room.
11) Learn some basic Portuguese words, and really try to match the pronunciation and accent, or else they wont hardly understand what you are saying. Chances are you will not be able to understand their accent either in Portuguese at first. Just keep saying COMO until they slow down their words.
12) You are going to Sao Paulo, a lot of people know how to speak English in Sao Paulo because of the massive competition for jobs there. (Not a whole lot of jobs, but a whole lot of people) They use this to sift through their candidates.
All these other guys on here have good info too. Listen to them. (Never go out at night alone) and stay close to the hotel. I, personally, would never give my original passport to the hotel or anyone but the federal police or my company that I work for.

I was in Barcelona last year when the Liberation vote was going on and crime was very much heightened. All of the above posts rang true for us while there and we were all on guard. Most of the time travelers are left alone, but everyone should certainly assume the worst. Being cautious costs nothing, but a stolen passport, cash, or valuable belongings will wreck the experience and potentially make the remainder of the trip a bitch

Good info and noted. Going with my boss who is a big guy and I'm not too small myself so hoping there won't be any problems. I plan on not going anywhere by myself and you're right, not a damn person will be seeing my passport but a customs agent. Lose that and you're fucked.
