    People really need to think BRFORE they set out on something like that.

    I hiked the Appalachian trail and you would be surprised at how many try to hike part of it before popping smoke.
    Thy leave with no plan, no back up supplies, no way to communicate etc

    They got lucky is right.

    Sounds like they didn't panic which is good in a situation like that. Doing so you make mistakes, get injured, etc. and then you're in even more trouble. Told friends where he was going so even better!
