I’d love a lock up tune for our trucks since the seem to love 6th/5th gear unlocked to pull grades. But my truck is mainly a work vehicle and I rely too much to be playing with custom tunes/tuning.

does the transmission ever lock in 3rd under normal conditions?
if not, when does it lock in 3rd or at what temperature? Is it 260F?

We do. Excuse the pics of my screen but laptop is dedicated to tuning truck. I can hold gears, lock TC, and have 2 throttle maps available 18+. If you want to see any maps let me know. Flex apply/release tables.

Automatic transmission problems have been caused by excessive heat since they've been invented 80+ years ago.
    This is nothing new.
Fluid breakdown is only a small part of the problem.
Every single servicable component in the transmission will have a shorter lifespan when subjected to higher temps. This is fact and common knowledge to anyone that has put hands on a transmission. (or googled it)
It doesnt matter if Toyota uses the greatest snake oil ATF ever developed... the rest of the transmission is still running questionably hot for long troublefree service.

Im not here trying to talk anyone out of their hard earned cash... but I will speak (with 38 years of hands-on experience) to the downside of running the trans too hot and the upside to controlling it better with an auxillary cooler.

If someone never pulls a trailer or abuses their truck... it may never be an issue... but I guarantee the same trans will live longer if its run 50 degrees cooler its entire life.

    As far as towing ?
I could not fathom doing so without adding the aux cooler.
The factory '19+ puck just doesnt have enough surface area to absorb the added heat. This is why Toyota came up with a "cheat" by locking the converter clutch to drop temps... which by the way...completely defeats the purpose of having a torque converter.

Which... brings another random thought to mind.
    Torque converter failure rates.

I wonder how well the torque converter clutch will handle the additional stress and strain of the new lockup programming.
Im not at all familiar with the Toyota design... but TCC's of years past were never designed to handle high-load, high torque conditions.
They were always engaged in upper gears at low load, highway speeds.
At the slightest increase in load, the TCC would drop out and let the converter slip.
Performance lockup converters would have as many as 5 clutches in them for added capacity/racing conditions... but stock lockup units were only ever designed for added fuel economy.

Maybe Toyota redesigned the torque converter to handle the extra load... I dont know... but thought it was worth a mention.

So you're saying the TCs in our trucks do the exact opposite of what they've done in every other truck for the last 100 years?

Its not new 07+, there was an issue with the TC clutch material in 2007 iirc.. Can’t see 19+ yet, but suspect they tweaked it, have to wait and see.

So I took my truck in the dealership for it's 5000 mile check up and asked about the transcooler which is shown on the sticker. Tech writer looked it up and said yes it does say that and would check. When I went to pick it up she forgot to check and called the shop manager and he said it's hidden behind the fenderwell. I'm sure it's not there and call BS. I think next time for my 10000 mile I'm going to give them hell about their explantion and tell them to prove to me. Any suggestions.

They are "kind of correct" as the puck kind of, maybe, round about way can be described to be found in the general area.

It is not there, bunch of posts about it.
All the third gen Tundra's have hockey puck looking device attached to the transmission called the transmission heater/cooler. Before 2019 trucks with the towing package also included a secondary cooler up front. This secondary cooler is not on any Tundra's 2019 or later.

Unfortunately, I had a similar problem on my 2019 Tundra, after reading more about this kind of problem on https://gearboxy.com/ I decided to make an appointment at the local Toyota service center. Their guys explained to me more about how automatic cooling oil works, and that I shouldn't be afraid if it happens again. IT can depend a lot on the area where the car is used. Because this problem mostly appears in warm states.
