According to some it is a lifetime filter and can be sold on eBay, OfferUp, etc, to the next tundra owner as long as the trans didn't have a catastrophic failure.

I don't think they changed but if buying parts then I would make sure you use your year. For instance the engine air filter did change for the 5.7 over the years. As for the trans filter, it could have but not sure.

2014-2021 have the same transmission but even the previous gen had a very similar filter, I know because I ordered the wrong one once. Took pictures in this thread https://www.tundras.com/threads/my-transmission-pan-adventure.110777/

thats a no brainer on buying parts for the same year as your truck.
My question on the truck year differences , is that maybe at some point these went from just a metal mesh to a paper element ?

I guess it all just depends on what you consider lifetime, lifetime that you're alive, lifetime of the vehicle, lifetime that you keep the vehicle. Toyota advertises ATF WS as a "Lifetime" fluid but then also recommends changing under certain conditions.

Nope, never were metal in the tundra, always a plastic housing containing a fiber material filter inside. As seen here, difference between first gen and second gen filters. https://www.tundras.com/threads/my-transmission-pan-adventure.110777/

Interesting way of looking at it. What constitutes a lifetime. Just like you mention, Toyota calls the WS a lifetime fluid, but it really isn't. So technically, depending on the conditions the screen/filter/strainer should be changed. Well I guess that to is up for discussion. :monocle:

Yeah, in all reality it comes down to the transmission pan bolts on if you should replace it or not. I wasnt even planning on replacing mine, I was just trying to change out my pan bolts for stainless and broke one so had to drop the pan to get the broken piece out and decided I might as well change the filter while Im at it.

Current mileage on my 2011 is 484k and my 2013 has 263k. I have never serviced either transmission. Both are used in our small business frequently carrying heavy loads.

Unless there is a problem with my reading comprehension, drain and fill is plenty good enough.

Looks like a pickup style filter (pump sucks ATF through the filter).

In my non-AB60 transmission pretty sure I saw one of valve body's exhaust ports going to the top of the filter, so the fluid was draining down through the filtration media to the sump. Or picked up by the pump. Hmm...

Yes is a low pressure pick up filter, opposite of a engine oil filter. The fluid will actually drain back down from the filter into the pan after the truck is off. When I took out the filter a decent amount of fluid came out. Other transmission definitely have more conventional style filters with an engine oil style high pressure filter, I believe the Allison uses one.
