Do you have any flow diagrams? The inside of my trans filter had clutch material on the inside of the filter sock, as if trans fluid was being pulled through the bottom of the filter. There was nothing on the outside of the sock that would suggest the fluid flows the way oure describing, at least in my particular case, im curious to learn more though. You can check link in the post above to see the debris inside my filter.

Dying on what mountain? It’s the Internet, lol. Some people take this shit too serious. I gave my opinion that what is $43 for a filter and everyone now is an engineer saying what the filter can and can’t do. Change it, don’t change it, I could care less. Just like some people go 10-15-20k between oil change. Their choice.

One slight difference being Toyota tells you to change the oil.

Because the owner should have a chance to correct a transmission problem he just observed. It still makes sense to catch that large chunk of metal that would otherwise seize the oil pump.

I'm saying that changing the filter regularly, like every other oil change, makes no sense. To me it also makes no sense changing ATF every 100k. My truck is at 38k miles now, I did 3 drain&fills already. Toyota ATF is cheap, not like brand ATF for European luxury cars.

Toyota also tells you to only use 0w-20, At least the US models.

Unlike gas tank, which you are sort of forced to open very often, transmission is a sealed unit. Nothing gets in, nothing gets out.

In what country do they tell to you to change the screen?

So they last only 1 million miles. While if Toyota was recommending 10w40 every 3k the engine could easily do 2 or even 3 million miles ;)

But if it’s an item that doesn’t require maintenance then the owner wouldn’t know anything till it craps out.
I also have done 1 drain and fill and you’re right, oil is cheap, so why not change the cheap filter at, say 60k or 80k. Cheap insurance I say.

Previous experience. Plus in rust belt it is all rusted already in 3 years. I don't want to go through the drilling nightmare just to find out that I was right and there's nothing inside the filter.

If you want to and can change the filter regularly - fine, it does not hurt. I'm doing that with my tires, like new tires every couple of years ;)

It says it’s an elementary word but I bet everyone can follow along.

Ah, go back to post 39. I talked about oil and you quote with the screen crap. I think they teach reading in elementary also. Maybe don’t quote an oil post when asking about a trans filter.
It’s also a filter/strainer not screen, per Toyotas description.

Lucky you. I have to deal with S.Florida heat and no salt on the roads. It’s like 80 today.

The issue with referring to it as a screen is #1 its not a screen, a screen is a metal mesh. #2 when people hear screen they think of it as a non serviceable item since there are transmission that only have a metal screen and not a filter. I'm not even advocating for people to replace it, i have but doesn't matter to me if anyone else does. Just trying inform people that it does have a replaceable filter and not a metal screen.

What am I making up? I have literally taken the filter out and cracked the plastic open to show what it is. Its a fiberious filter, not a metal screen.

    Who said it was metal?

screen: a perforated plate or cylinder or a meshed wire or cloth fabric usually mounted and used to separate coarser from finer parts.

I know, Merriam-Webster is wrong too.

:fingerscrossed: Let's here it....come on with it @Tileguy, please share your transmission service history and odometer reading with us. Also while on the subject gents, seems like I read somewhere that the computer makes pressure adjustments for fluid age and there is a way to change it in techstream. Yes, no, or no idea? I'm skeptical, but I suppose it's possible and sort of makes sense.:notsure:

Okay, point is, its not a screen, screens separate larger material. The filter in the transmission blocks small particles as well. You wouldnt call whats in your engine an air screener, or oil screener. The reason I even replied to this is the dealer told the OP that is was a lifetime screen that you dont replace which is incorrect. Not sure the point of arguing semantics, its a filter that can be replaced, not a lifetime screen thats not replaceable.

    ok thanks.
are we certain that the tundra had the same transmission through out the years?
does the transmission on a 2016 use the same filter/screen/strainer as the 2019?
