My truck is almost 3yrs old has 25630 miles. I dont abuse my truck. The skid plate is almost pristine. Transmission started with a minor issue. Took 2 trips to dealer for them to find the problem. Of course transmission is covered under warrenty. The disconcerning issue is. There are no new transmissions in the usa. So my vehicle sits at the dealership with other toyotas. Started at it will be here 2weeks to 1 month. Now i am told 2 months to 4. This to me isnt acceptable. Plus they wont reset the transmission warrenty back to 0. So new transmission but a partially used up warrenty. Think i should have kept my old tundra. Dont know what i was thinking buying a new one. Dealer said there was metal shaving in the transmission fluid.

What is it doing? Transmission failures are almost unheard of, especially in a 2.5 gen.

This is standard warranty language. You would be hard pressed to find any manufacturers that would “reset” the clock.

What was the minor issue it had? Did it turn into a major issue at some point?

I’m sure they wouldn’t replace the transmission for a minor issue.

I envy you. Mine sits at dealer since 2024. Seems no pats to make the new trans for that year. I also find that hard to believe. But i have no choice.

Not sure what a squatter is. Bare with me gentleman. Sorry to invade the mens club. But i felt you men would be more honest to me then dealer. They think i am just a stupid female. Not so stupid n i will exhaust all avenues to solving my problem. Including legal if necessary.

My last tundra as you would say wore like iron n was a tank. Felt safe and very secure. Traveled all over the country in it. Camped n fished. Sorry i traded it in for a new one. N definitly dont want 2022 or newer. I want my baby back. The loaner is horrible.

Started as a weird noise. Then 4 weeks later backed out of drive way put it in park. Then into drive n for moment nothing. So back to dealer. No my truck isnt abused or a built up truck. I dont abuse it. But do go to beach to fish n to woods to camp. Love driving in the snow. Plus always have the bed ready for a drop of the hat get out of dodge. For a quick vacation.

These "gentleman" have been. As previously mentioned it's almost unheard of for a generation 2.5 transmission to fail. Have you been pulling a 14,000 pound trailer every week?

    Too many, but not enough....
You can't expect an answer with next to 0 information. I bet what happen was the parking pawl is busted or something to do with shifting the trans without coming to a full stop.

Sometimes mechanical parts just break. Thankfully you are under warranty when this failure happened.

Not sure what details. Iam not towing anything, was in 4 wheel drive when the first terrible sound was heard on flooded road. Was backing up when noise occured. Maybe id be better off taking it from toyota and have smeone rebuild the transmission. But that would definitly void warrenty. I surely dont want my truck sitting at dealer for next 6 months. What is toyota's excuse for not having transmissions avail? They own 3 teansmission manufacturers here in the usa.

You did get a loaner vehicle right? Three months is ridiculous in my book to wait on a warranty item.

If I were to guess - and this a complete guess - sand driving can put a lot of heat in to the transmission and can cause the clutches to delaminate and burn up the steels in the clutch packs. I'm not accusing you of being careless or abusing the truck, but sand can be a bit a of an unassuming trap. Or, as ColoradoTJ said, sometimes stuff just breaks.

As others have mentioned - transmission failures on these trucks are rare. I work mine hard but monitor the temps closely in an attempt to extract maximum reliability and longevity. These guys are being straight with you. Unfortunately, we are still living in with the COVID supply change shortage. Yes, that sounds like a cop-out, but it's the unfortunate truth. Parts that should be available may be on the shelf one day, then unavailable for an undetermined amount of time the next day. I've run in to this problem with all sorts of parts and materials - and continue to run in to supply shortages. Toyota does own several manufacturing facilities but they are struggling to get materials and meet their QC standards while pumping out parts for new vehicles; parts for previous generation models are lower in priority because car manufactures need to sell new cars more than they need to sell parts for old cars.

Still a bummer to have to wait, though.

That actually might be it (post Covid supply chain) with the long lead times.

    But they gave you one.

I'm sorry to hear of your problems, hope they get it fixed soon.
When my catalytic converters were stolen on my 2014 back in 2021, it took 8 months for Toyota to get the replacement parts.
Toyota paid for my loaner for 7 of those months, and my insurance paid for the first month.
I was fortunate enough to be put in a 2021 Tacoma for those 8 months.

When I first dropped it off they said 6 weeks, then another month, then another month, and finally they told me they had no idea when they would get the parts.
My truck sat on the lot for those 8 months.
I would come by and visit it once a month.

They did give me a new battery for free when it was fixed so that was nice.
Granted my truck was paid for, I'm sure it would be harder not having your truck if you're making payments on it while it sits on the lot.

Hope they get your issue rectified soon.
I'd be happy it was under warranty and they provided a loaner..

Good luck and welcome to the forum..

Yes they gave me a loaner. 4runner. I HATE it. But now iam in limbo. Cant take it out of state. They need notification. And every 24 days i need to renew the loaner contract. Which they have to bring me to resign. Because there computers cant sebd a filled out contract. Whats the point in having warrenty n a extended warrenty if they have no parts.

This thread is making my head hurt.

They gave you a loaner. Notify them if you need to leave the state. Renew the contract that they bring to you and let your truck sit and not collect miles until they get it resolved for free (UNDER WARRANTY). Shit happens and it breaks. You're lucky that it happened now and not in 3 years outside of your warranty.

The 4runner is a great vehicle. But if you're only comparing it to your truck than that's the flaw.

    Good luck

I know we don't have any information and so this thread is 100% speculation on everything....but I've been patiently waiting for someone to address the elephant in the room.

You know......the fact that the 2021 doesn't have a factory transmission cooler.

Sorry to hear, sounds more like your dealer is just not that great in customer service. Especially if they are not keeping you informed. Have you tried reaching out directly to toyota?

I can totally see them replacing the entire trans, most auto manufacturers don't want a tech tearing into a trans when it's just a quick to toss a new one in and less worry on a come-back.

I had to renew the loaner every month as well.
They sent me a link and I did it on my phone.
I digitally initialed and signed it.

I'm sure not leaving the state is a PITA, being you live in New Jersey..

I had so many delays in my 8 months I finally quit asking them for updates.
I had a new Tacoma to drive and Toyota was paying for it.

As everyone else told you, transmission failure isn't a big issue in these Gen 2.5 Tundras.
Why would Toyota have a big stock on something that rarely fails?

I know you're pissed, but you are being taken care of.
You do have a loaner, they will get your truck fixed.
As someone else stated the COVID BS is still affecting supply.

Did you try contacting the dealer GM or Toyota corporate to get this moving along?

It’s unfortunate you experienced a transmission failure in your Tundra. Super rare. Under the circumstances, however, I’d feel fortunate that the repair/replacement is covered under warranty AND you have a free loaner!

Heck, when my 911 experienced an incredibly rare engine issue it took 12 months to get the vehicle repaired, I didn’t get a loaner AND it cost me $25K. It could be worse.

Was it the “incredibly rare” IMS bearing failure?
