2019-2021s should have a few more pounds of payload, though. Checkmate.

Were you towing in 6th gear? Also why are you going 80mph towing? I have a 2019, and watch my temps every single drive. I made a 8 hour trip a few weeks ago and staying in 5th gear and never seen over 220 but I also dont go over 65mph.

Are you not doing the same arm chair engineering by saying it needs one? The actual Toyota engineers have already explained they did their most extreme testing and the cooler wasn’t needed.

I will rarely be towing but will do some offroading...unclear if the lack of cooler will actually impact me!

I also wonder if there are a bunch of transmission failures in a few years if Toyota will do a recall...

How exactly do you know that all the failures that have actually not taken place yet, will occur right after the Warranty expires? Can you see into the future? :monocle:

FYI, a select few here know for a fact that an actual Toyota engineer stated that it was needed and it became an economics over anything else policy. So there you have it. So, much for my armchair engineering. Next!

So one unnamed engineer says its so, and you call that the end of the conversation? How about we use some facts and data instead of just your emotions?

The guys name could not be or was not shared because of his employment importance. Leaking trade secrets will cost people their employment. I don't play that.

Facts are many people here buy and install coolers. Many need them, a few may not, but better to have and not need vs. Vice versa.

Under what conditions towing and weight, and what gear and speed? Or are those trade secrets?

Before I installed my cooler I was seeing temps in the 215 range driving in the city. Now it’s mostly 185-190. I did see 197 in the pan and 233 in the torque converter towing 4-5k over Stevens Pass on US-2 but I maintained 60 all the way up. On the interstate I use tow haul and just leave it D and let it eat.

That fair, I was just saying that if driven within what Toyota probably does their testing limits which would most likely be the speed limit throughout most of the USA you wont see crazy high temps, if you are going to tow at 80mph in 6th gear then yes definitely add a cooler. If you want to drive the speed limit in 5th since you really shouldn't tow in 6th anyways since the toque converter will continue to lock and unlock then you can get by without one. I am someone who got my 2019 and have been following my pan temps for years now and can say driving in 4th in the city and 5th on the highway at 65mph will keep your temps down without the cost of adding a cooler and will also reward you with better mpgs. I do wish I had a cooler but Ill say not having one now makes me less likely to get a speeding ticket and also caused me to start do drain and fill of the ATF as regular maintenance. I am definitely on the side of the truck should have a cooler but just wanted to add my experience for those who dont have one. Also if you were unaware you can use your OBD to display when your TC is locked or unlocked which helps a great deal with temps. Ive come to the conclusion that 6th gear is completely useless, even unloaded with a small incline it will have to downshift or unlock so the only time I let it go to 6th is the winter time.

Just so you know tow haul mode does absolutely nothing to help with temps, it simply changes the shift points, what it really should do is lock out over drive ie. 6th gear. The difference in temps between 5th and 6th are huge.

I saw a picture and it showed the intercooler on the passenger side and transmission cooler on drivers side of grill, but I'm not sure what site, I was looking over internet pictures at work to show the 22 changes to a friend at work.

I can't find the site on my phone, lol. It also showed the bed is composite, not alum or steel, very slippery, will have to spray a liner to stop anything from just sliding around the bed.

That engineer also said "We probably just removed it for cost, making assumptions that people didn’t actually need it." That one word casts doubt on certainty, and thus the conversation can continue.

The TC temp isn't the issue. What was the pan temp?

It makes the truck hold the gears longer, and that essentially locks out 6th in situations with load, but allows for better economy on long flats or downhills. It functions fine for that. Toyota did say that the trucks lacking coolers had some work done to keep the converter locked more when towing, and that would help control heat. Less than ideal, but saying it does nothing isn't true.

Purely stirring the pot here, but it's possible that there are two intercoolers and no transmission cooler behind the grill.:stirthepot:

Anything is possible at this point, it was just an image of the tundra front end, on the left was intercooler, right was transmission cooler. But I can't even find the image again, lol Showed composite bed, an electric air dam that pops down at highway speeds, 400w inverter in bed for hybrid and a bunch of suspension options for different trim levels.

Im just talking from real world experience, tow haul is completely useless to control temps it just makes you hold the lower gears longer to make you have more take off power with a heavy loads but as far as cruising speed it does nothing.
