Well I am criticizing anyone that still is operating one of these Tundras that has a runaway nuclear reactor core installed where the trangsmission should be.

Why don't they make it clear you should be towing in S4?

So what? Ha. You need to remove your OEM factory cooler in order to comment on this thread! Because Toyota says you don't need it.

Because the truck was never designed to tow on the highway in S4. It’s an automatic transmission with a tow haul feature not a manual transmission. People read the owners manual and misinterpret what it says. S4 is to be used to assist with engine braking especially when descending grades, not flat highway towing!

People have been advising to not tow with auto transmissions in OD gears for decades…

    EXACTLY^^

Flat or mountainous terrain does not matter. And it will not hurt a thing except mpg’s…

The addition of tow haul was to help the tranny hold gears longer so it won’t go into overdrive as often. Comparing junk trannys in GM’s and Dodges (pre Ram) from the past that notoriously failed is where the don’t use overdrive when towing came from. I have never towed on the highway with any of my trucks in manual gears with no ill effects, but to each his own.

Well IMO mpg’s are a factor, seeing as these trucks get notoriously bad fuel economy anyway.

When towing 50% or more of capacity of any truck the mpg’s are going out the window.

My rule of thumb for longevity and safety was tow at 1/2 max OEM tow rating for 1/2 ton and below. If 3/4 ton or above then tow 10% over lol, those truck much stronger. my F250 transmission and driveshaft dwarfed my Tundras. Problem with 3/4ton and above is horrific turning radius, ride etc....

Show me a gas engine truck that gets more than 10 mpg when towing heavy.

1/2 of max rated towing for the Tundra can be accomplished by a Kia Sorento or a Jeep Cherokee.

I had a 2019 Tundra 4.6L which didn't come with a tow package, another Toyota fail, but towing my 3500 lbs trailer I regularly saw temps of 225F. I was not happy with that at all.

2 Toyota fails, building a truck without a full tow package and building a tow package without a cooler. Oh well, I got $3K more than I paid for the truck after 18 months. Lol, I only paid $34K CAD which at the time was like $25K USD for a new Tundra, that's why I bought it. Now my 2017 5.7L pulls that trailer like nothing.

It's a Toyota fail because you bought a truck that didn't have a tow package intending to tow with it? It's not their fault you didn't do your research before buying.

I'm still trying to find out what the perfect temp range is for transmission fluid. I understand you should only tow in S4 but what temp should I keep my transmission fluid at?

Does the 4.6 have the puck or is that a different system than the 2019 + 5.7?

You gotta look at the massive 3.2 and 3.3 V-6 models that rival our Tundras

Sorry, but, no, the comparison is silly. First, half is half! Second, towing involves much more than engines. I had a 4runner rated to 5,000 pounds. Just saying it is “half” doesn’t come close to conveying the capability and stability of towing with a full sized pickup vs mid-sized SUV. My modest 3000 lb boat was well within the 5000 lb 4runner tow rating, but had a low ceiling mph going uphill and just 3000 lbs was like the tail wagging the dog in curves and when stopping.

Clearly everyone’s comfort range is different. I used to tow 25,000 lbs daily with a Ram 3500, towing 5,000 lbs with a half ton is light towing. My boat weighs more than 5,000 lbs and I tow it at interstate speeds without flinching. 7500 and up regularly is where it starts to get challenging in a half ton, and the drivetrain will reflect it.

All kidding aside…seriously though? A Kia Sorento pulling 5k…

And to @SSPey point let’s look at the 5th gen 4Runner with 5k towing capacity. Mine was a dog with 1.5k (less than half capacity) hooked up. It’s a great truck but terrible at towing PERIOD. So yet again the 50% capacity is not a bad starting point. And the Kia argument is asinine…

It not about comfort though…. It’s about braking, take-off, and maneuvering streets. Many vehicles on the road these days simply cannot handle the capacity the manufacturer touts. 12k on an aluminum F150 feather weight…I don’t need to own the truck to know that’s BS.
