If trading you will be lucky to recover half the cost of the mods. I had a dealer tell me they like mods and pay for them on trades but I never tested them. I would try to sell yourself versus trading.

I don't think I'll get anything on the mods. They asked if I had original wheels to put back. Told them I'd switch the grill back and they don't care. Might sell but then I have more tax to pay.

what do you want to buy next? If another Toyota, then you may have more bargaining power on the trade. I agree that selling privately will get you more, but if you're in a state that gives a tax break on trading, then that may be more beneficially financially.

Looking at an X5. Jim, I'm in Syracuse. You bought some flares off me last summer. Right now they're below low KBB without even looking at my addons.

Your mods mean zero to the dealer on a trade in. They check KBB, NADA guides, and local regional sales. If you’re checking out Bimmers, check the X3 M40i, and drive it...it’s fast and fun to drive. Drive it, even if it’s not your choice, you won’t believe the power. Next best thing to a X5M that sells for over 100K.

Got the itch for something new and sick of parking outside. Might keep it another year. If I trade I'm gonna pull everything off I can. I'll have to leave the lift and tires. Not sure the stereo is worth pulling. I'll let you know what I have to sell.

Aftermarket parts add zero value to a dealer, in fact it may actually lower value. Secondly the desk man gets paid on the difference between what they buy the truck for from you and ACV. That’s actual cash value for people not in the biz. You’re always, always, better selling it yourself.

Additionally you should remove all the mods and sell them separately, this should net you 50 percent or so of their value depending on condition and demand for that particular mod.

Alternatively buy something that won’t keep in your shop in business and has some semblance of resale value.

Probably keep your truck so you don’t eat all that initial depreciation for no good reason.

Better in some ways but you still have to factor the "cost" of convenience, practicality, and then there's the real cost of tax savings on a trade in some states.

Selling a vehicle for 5 grand is one thing. Dealing with tire kickers, people trying to get their own financing for a private deal in the 20k+ range can be an intimidating / overwhelming process for a private buyer and seller to wrap their heads around. Especially if vehicle has a lien against it / bank owns it.

Took a quick look at the inventory at Burdick BMW and theres 0 trucks, so they're probably going to send yours straight to auction. I say take off everything but the lift since the labor would probably be more than the parts are worth. Why can't you take the wheels off?

That thinking is like being happy that they're taking out more in income taxes because it may yield a bigger refund. :D

Sell it yourself. Even though you will entertain the lowest of the low in indecisive tire kickers and scam artists trying to con you, you will totally come out ahead selling it yourself. You will despair and think it's never going to happen, but it will, and you will profit. If the fair market value is $36K-$38K as @BTBAKER says, then I predict the dealer will offer you $30K on the trade.

Look up the "individual" sale price on KBB. KBB will give you a range that depends on condition, and you will have to be objective in assessing your Tundra. If you're too optimistic about it's condition, you'll receive few inquiries because you will be overpriced compared to other junker listings.

KBB will also tell you what trade-in value you can expect. They have a service whereby you can solicit dealer cash offers, but the problem there is the same as trading it in. Dealers are in business to make big profit (they have overhead), and they get it by giving you bupkus on your trade, and then overcharging the next guy for the nice condition of your vehicle.

I recently used cargurus.com and autotrader.com to advertise my wife's 11 year old Malibu. The dealer trade-in value on a "5" condition, very clean vehicle was $3000-$3500; I sold it myself for $6250, and that was a very good deal to the buyer (compare to typical dealer asking of $7900).

It costs nothing to list on cargurus.com, but if you sell through them, they want $99 to fully complete the transaction for you. I haven't tried this; I prefer to sell it face-to-face for cash, and provide the buyer with the completed title application and transit permit.

Cargurus.com will even provide the buyer financing if they require, but the problem with that is, pending approval, your car may be off the market. I've always found it's better to deal with people that live close, but with a willingness to drive a little to see a nice vehicle. Ask them to bring cash in $100 bills, pass the signed title and application for title over to them when the money is received, and the deal is DONE. Over about $10K-15K, a wire transfer will be preferred by the buyer, just don't release the title and vehicle until the funds have been in your account overnight. To sell yourself, you will need to research and know the process in your state.

Autotrader.com is another listing company. They charge a flat rate for the listing period you select. Craig's list is not my favorite. Local print media ads are almost worthless. I've gotten more scam artists using autotrader to find marks. So, just be careful you don't make the mistake of giving out any personal info. You will also get people that live 2500 miles away clicking the "BUY" button on a $6500 car with no clue what it will cost to ship or drive a vehicle that far. I don't need that hassle, so I try to deal with locals I can see face-to-face.

    Long post. Sorry...:blahblah:

Currently: Python alarm with autostart, JDMCar console organizer. About to do: Trd Sway bar, Amp Research bed extender, ESP under seat storage, DIY wireless phone charging mod, Tyger "star armor" running boards, Husky xact fit mats. Thinking about doing very soon and researching more: Lift or level kit (with closest to stock ride), replace the current 20" wheels with 18" trd pro wheels and BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 Radial Tire -LT275/70R18/E 125/122R (or similar) Start of summer adding: Full stereo replacement with android auto/wifi head unit, midrange to high end speakers and amp, JL audio pre designed dual sub Tundra enclosure, Yakima 5 bike tilting hitch carrier with snowboard attachment, darkest privacy tint all around, LED headlights, possibly hard cover of some kind.
Dont apologize... thanks for the info! Cheers

I would definitely recommend cargurus.com. I sold my 2018 Tundra Double Cab that way...all they take is $99 processing fee. It was a smooth transaction and the buyers and I were happy.

If you find a buyer, have the dealer do a courtesy trade. You get more money, and they use the "trade-in" so you only pay taxes on the difference. Here in LA anyway, its how I have traded in ALL of my vehicles.

Is there any instance where someone took a vehicle to a dealership for a trade in....and didn't get bent over. I suppose from a dealership's standpoint, they are in it to make money and either they get what they want or you can walk. The next guy will be through the door in about 5 mins.

In other news I went to the dealer to grab a cabin air filter and ended up talking to the GM. I was like yea, mine is 3 years old hope to drive it 10-15 and get 300-500k out of it. He was like, nah...you'll get tired of looking at it.

No, I get tired of car payments.

I've owned a few vehicles, BMW the biggest POS without a doubt. Can't even sniff the dealership for under $1000, the most leaking, falling apart, needs another part car ever.

Pure trash. Stay far away. Germany sucks!

Not sure what state you are in but here we can take a sales tax credit for a private sale if its within 45 days before or after new purchase. We do get tax credit for trade in also.
