So I have a '16 that I have a little over a year left to pay off. I'm at 97K miles. Truck has been a bad ass and solid. I've done a ton to it, most of which I could take off if needed.

But I'm thinking of trading it in for a new one. With what my truck is worth and what I have left, I figure I'd have potentially about 15K of equity towards the new one.

Keeping and paying off my '16 would be awesome and not have a truck payment. But it would also be awesome to have a new one, warranty, and probably a lot lower monthly payment. Most of the mods I've done I could put on the new one as well.

    So what should I do?

Is there anything you absolutely need that a new one will have yours does not? Lower miles and a warranty are nice but you know these trucks, 100k is just broken in. and how many times have you used your warranty since you owned your truck? Two things to consider. If there’s nothing you absolutely can’t live without in a new 21 I say keep what you have. It’s essentially the same truck.

Keep your existing truck and pay it off Enjoy it for many more years with no payment. It’s modded the same way you want. Might get a lower payment on a new one but you’ll extend payments 5 more years. And spend a lot to mod it the way you want........once paid off, put your monthly payment that you would have paid in a separate account and by the time you want or need a new truck you’ll have a healthy down payment to put down

As everyone has said, I'd keep it. Unless there are things you do not like about your truck that you can't change. If you have regrets everyday about your truck, go trade it and be happy. Otherwise pay yours off and have that freedom. If you keep maintaining your truck you will get many years out of it and save a ton of money. Yes your monthly payment might be higher right now, but you should almost be done with it. Why take on more dept if you like your truck and it does everything you need?

I would keep it at least until the new tundra is out soon to see what they have to offer.

other than that, its all what you want.

If anything, it would just be to add a few of the nicer bells and whistles they've added over the years, and maybe 4x4. Not that I've ever had a need for it. But yeah, that was my thought too. I'd be getting basically the same truck and want to set it up the same way. I just have that new truck itch and wanting others to push me off the fence one way or the other.

That's one of my concerns though. What will the new Tundra be? If I dont like the design or what they put into it, then I'm screwed on getting a new one, ha. '21 may be the last chance to get a NEW truck and know what I'm getting. Dumb I know, but maybe not?

I would love to not have a vehicle payment and we have my wife's RAV4 and my daily driver Corolla HB still to pay for. My 2010 Tundra still does exactly what I need it to, so I am keeping it until it costs more to fix than it's worth. If your '16 does everything you need it to, why take on additional years of payments?

A lot lower payment but for another 4 or 5 years? Doesn't make sense. Your truck is under 100k miles, its not even broken in by Toyota standards. Keep it, pay it off, save your money.

If you have the money to give the bank to finance go for it. I would pay it off and use the extra money to put into a mod and maintenance fund for it since it will go another 150k miles. Remember the newer trucks are higher in price and i can say as an auto manufacturing engineer that they are definitely cutting corners on the newer ones. More plastic and less reliability. And dont kid yourself on the warranty. good luck bro.

You could refinance it but again your giving the bank money.

IMO I think you should keep it or wait for the 2022...the '21 is the same as the '20 but over priced

I made the choice to upgrade whenever I still had the chance, went from a 2016 DC that I still had a number of years ahead of me to pay off. It was reaching a major depreciation point of 100k miles and 5 years old, plus needed some tires and brakes work. I had never wanted to keep that truck long term, has every intention of just driving it for a few years and upgrading into a Crewmax. Trouble is the used market on Tundras is crap right now so my initial plan of finding a used 2020 didn't really play out. Luckily I was able to work a few of the dealers around me to compete for my business and I ended up getting a brand new one for less than what some dealers were asking for low mileage 2018 and 2019's.

I will say this, if I only had a year left on my old truck I would've probably kept it but having 3 years of payments ahead of me made it an easy choice to trade it.

Just read about the trans cooler, guess I haven't been paying attention. I dont tow anything, so not really a problem for me, but I understand other's issue with it.

Haha, new truck smell.. might just have to do that.

( Snickering ) If you guys only knew what these newer products looked like under the nice shiny plastic and leather your head would spin. Steel is in a very bad point right now, and everyone is scrambling just to buy bottom shelf to keep production running. Rust on the metal Ah its ok the customer will never see it or its going to get covered up. Not to mention well we need 1 more MPG on this rating so lets put some extra holes in the seat framing so its lighter. Oh and we can mark the price up another 10k.
After knowing this first hand I'll keep my 2nd gen and just rebuild it myself.

Don't do it.. Pay the truck off and enjoy. If you want a new one down the road, save the payment every month and then in a few years pay mostly or all cash...

I have a 2017 with 118k on it. I've thought about doing the same, but the thought of being debt free is more enticing than having a payment for next few years.

Mostly superficial ones.. ha, and depending on what trim lvl. Auto A/C, heated or cooled seats, auto headlights, lane assist, blind spot monitoring, more usb/power plug options, leather trim steering wheel, hood scoop, color matched bumpers, sun roof, new truck smell HA, etc... Do these have individual tire pressure read out yet? Lots of little stuff but nothing that is night and day over what I have now.

Like I said, it's just a new truck itch I'm trying to satisfy or put away.

I would keep it until they reveal the remodel. You'd still be able to get a 2021 towards the end of the year. Maybe the remodel will be what ya want, if not get the 2021. I kept my 2014 for a little over 5yrs and 101k miles, but traded it (DC) for a (CM). Both 4wd. I don't think mpg is gonna be a big difference between 2wd and 4wd, so I'd definitely get it. Better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

I also got a few bells n whistles over my '14 SR5. BSMS, auto headlights, lane assist, color matched, hood scoop, and yes, each tire has independent readout. Hehehe. TRD Sport will be what you want for all of this. Limited if you want sunroof and leather, auto a/c. My favorite feature is the radar cruise control.

There will always be new bells and whistles. It would be a very poor financial decision to upgrade just based on that. Are you completely debt free? With significant savings in the bank or other investments? If the answer to these is "no," then keep your truck. Once it is paid off, put that money toward paying off other debt and saving/investing. You will be in much better shape financially five years from now if you do that.

Your truck looks great but I was in the same boat and ended traded my 2 wheel drive for the 4-wheel drive. I really wanted it and used it several times yesterday.
