@bobbilly Hoping you can help me out with VIN# 5TFMA5EC9PX013930. My ETA was supposed to be March 11 and on March 8, I was told that my vehicle was on hold for the tonneau cover recall but I didn’t order a tonneau cover. Then yesterday I was told it was on hold for 30 days for some reason *other* than the tonneau cover. Toyota corporate has no details to share, dealership is awaiting for more information. Other Tundras going to other dealerships in my state all dropped off inbound inventory on Toyota.com’s website. If there is some unannounced recall, I would like to be informed so I can decide accordingly. I realize your source might not have any details but hoping to figure out where the truck is currently located.

hold status never has any details for the dealer to pass along, so they are not at fault if they cant really give you any updates. when they put out the massive 12-22 qc hold across the nation, no one knew what it was about. everyone speculated it was for the blank dash screen fix, but it was still speculation (albeit pretty close we think) that it was the blank dash tsb.

@nodak67 - understood that the dealership has no information which is why I contacted Toyota NA multiple times to see what information they had to share. For whatever reason, they redirected me back to the dealership which as you point out, doesn’t know why Toyota NA placed the hold. The dealership has done all they can do Toyota NA just needs to be more forthcoming with information.

yeah unfortunately the ports are very lacking in up channeling status updates on qc, etc holds into the tracking systems. i think the system only has a very basic drop down selection list on what status is reported in the tracking system.

if you look at a lot of the 12-22 qc holds the status is basically boiler plate display across the country. the internal trracking system is proably more detailed but we dont get to see that system facing outward.

I am in the same situation. I had confirmed that the unit arrived at the rail yard, contacted dealer to confirm it had been loaded on truck for delivery and found out about the QC hold. Would like to find out more but don't want to run out of information requests. Was about to arrange travel as I am looking at a 7 hour drive/possible flight. I sold my Tacoma a few weeks ago. I stressed that this would happen, and so it did. Now I am sharing with my wife's car and it is not easy.

I was able to convince the dealer to contact the Toyota Regional Rep (?) and was told that there is some hose issue that needs to be checked. Very vague and more of a generic response seems like. I was also told that quite a few Tacoma's were held up in QC recently for a few weeks, and over 10 units came through a few days ago, no problem. Standard stuff and nothing to worry about.

If anyone has a more detailed explanation on the process within the QC process/rail yard to car-hauler transition, it would be greatly appreciated. I scoured much of the previous posts in this thread but info seems a little spotty.

This is like sitting in traffic. Sucks, but if you know things are at least moving along, it helps a lot.

the problem with qc holds or any holds is that a port or railyard could be dealing with multiple holds across many models/trims. so tracking that info in the status system is not feasible and or not advisable so the front facing dealer or people dont need to know about that info to "save face" so to speak.

once it arrives at a railyard, the vehicle is processed and checked for any qc/stop sale/etc holds. if none apply it can take up to 10 days before its loaded onto a transport (transport companies wont just transport 1 vehicle to a dealer)

the transport company is a 3rd party business. all you get from toyota is when its loaded on a transporter and when it arrives at the dealer and its processed by the dealer. the 3rd party doesnt have any inputs into the tracking system.

Sounds like everything you've been told is accurate, unfortunately. Your vehicle is on QC hold. Dealers typically can't get information from the yard about a vehicle. It will take time for the vehicle to be processed and then inspected. Hope it goes quick!
    upload_2023-3-15_9-14-21.jpg

Hopefully in the next few days!
    upload_2023-3-15_9-14-59.jpg

I can tell you it is moving along. It will just depend on where your vehicle falls in the line and if it meets the specifics. I'm not sure of the process for this, but I do know some holds have to be handled by Toyota techs, not dealer techs. The sad part is the dealer won't know until it shows up on the lot.

    @bobbilly and @nodak67 I appreciate the info.

Just to clarify, the dealer will not have any info other than the truck pulling into the dealership? They won't have an incoming notice or something similar? "QC complete" "Loaded on Truck" "ETA: x/x/x". Would just like to know what to keep an eye out for, whether that be more VIN requests on the pipeline page, weekly Friday updates, or just waiting on the dealer to call and say "hey, guess it showed up! Surprise!"

Don't want to be that annoying guy, but would like to stay as informed as possible within reason.

Thanks @bobbilly!! Not a great look for Toyota though. QC after it leaves the factory isn't very confidence inspiring. Not sharing details with the prospective owner is even worse IMO.

The irony is that if you call Toyota customer care, they tell you to call the dealership. The dealership didn't place a hold on these vehicles. Are they just purposefully annoying customers and dealerships?

I'm asking for information on a product that I ordered. Toyota is refusing to provide that information either directly or through their designated agent. No, I have never encountered such poor customer responsiveness. Please provide examples of this apparently ubiquitous practice.

I cannot think of any other product in which you can get a status from a manufacturer to dealer. I think dealers are doing us a favor by letting us have a glimpse behind the curtain. There is a reason customers cannot look up the status. Its to prevent every customer filling their inboxes with "Where is my car?, What is a QC?" questions. Why should the customer care about QC status while in transit? They should just be concerned with the quality of a delivered product. I could be totally out in left field here, but that's my opinion.

I think we all want a quality product. I wont speak for others but my only issue is timing. I was told a delivery date range and planned on that window to take delivery. I sold my truck with these dates in mind. My truck arrived at the port and sat for 2-3 weeks only to have a QC hold placed on it. I am fine with QC but planned my transportation needs based off of other information I was provided. QC is a good thing, but the lack of info and misinformation is the hard part.

Toyota has exposed an API where you can get most of the information about status of vehicle build - toyota-tracker.com. This level of transparency should be applauded. The issue is when they pull vehicles from status suddenly and will not provide any additional information on the reason. After tax and licensing, I'm about to drop $70k on a vehicle and it is not unreasonable to ask for details on why my vehicle is on a QC hold.

FWIW, when I ordered and received my BMW X5, I was provided a link where I could track status. That's been available for 15+ years from BMW. And when it hit delays, I could get explanations as to why. Nothing special about my expectations.

In my experience(I shared an office with the inventory manger who's done it for 25+ years), if the vehicle hits QC hold he can't just call up the rail yard and get info. Imagine 1200+ dealers calling railyards asking for updates. Talk about a shit show, pissed of railyards and the list goes on. They can contact the regional office and ask the region for an update WHICH they can get occasionally. It's not that they will never tell us why, but it's not technically the dealers vehicle until it hits the lot so they don't really have to. That info IS available from the dealer once it clears the QC hold.

This is strictly my opinion, but after the gas pedal issue, Toyota's pretty tight lipped about these kind of things. Again, my opinion. Will they hide it from you? No, but they aren't going to update you every step of the way either. They don't need to. There's a reason most people buy Toyota. It's a Toyota :D

I'm more than happy to provide you a daily update on the tracking, it's not the best solution, but it's better than being in the dark. It does sound like your dealer is showing you everything they have as well, which is the same as I do. Just not as much as we'd like.

Hope this toilet dump of my thoughts make sense. Let me know if I can clarify anything.

I'd call this more of a benefit than an industry standard ;). Up until the chip shortage this wasn't ever an issue for Toyota. You could literally walk onto most lots and have your choice of vehicle in multiple colors.
