So I've upgraded to 20x10 Hostile Wheels and a 35' Toyo AT3. After a few days of driving I get a TPMS Malfunction error msg. I've tried to reset it myself via the button. Took it back to 4 Wheel Parts and they did a reset via the reset tool and the message did not go away. They advised to take it to a Toyota dealership as they advised to keep the OEM TPMS sensors as they are better than any aftermarket sensors. I've taken it to the Toyota dealership where i bought the truck multiple times now and the first couple of times it was 'we will reset it.' I've taken it back now a 4th time and the tech has contacted Toyota and they stated that the TPMS is "mounted backwards" therefore gives off the malfunction code. They've stated that with those wheels that there isn't a way to mount the OEM sensors on the wheel properly therefore i will just have to be like the 'OLD DAYS' and check my tire pressure regularly. :monocle::rofl::rofl: I've never heard of this before and will probably find another dealer since 4WheelParts and Toyota dealership are of no help.

    Has anyone had this issue?

    What to do?!?!?

What sensors are installed? The OEM sensors from your original wheels? Which stock wheels did you have. If they were steel, those sensors will not work.

The original OEM sensors that were install on the TSS 20 inch wheels. They weren't the steel wheels.

That may be a viable option at this point.

I just got off the phone with a Hostile Wheels guy, pretty much said it happens and that i may need to go to an aftermarket TPMS sensor.

The 2018 and up models don't like aftermarket sensors. You need OEM part # 42607-0C091 for alloy wheels.

If that is what was originally installed then thats what's on the new wheels.

It would be interesting to see how they are mounted. I am learning the 2020 still as I upgraded from a 2013.

Here is the official write up. I spoke to the folks at 4WP and they were surprised that the dealer said this and they themselves would try a few things and contact the dealership.

That is some BS for sure. Maybe have another dealer look at it? I would have them break a tire down and see how it is mounted.

FWIW I’ve been running aftermarket sensors for 6 months on my 2019 when I upgraded my steelies to alloy wheels with no issues whatsoever.

From what I'm hearing the 2020's are a little more sensitive to what is used. I have aftermarket sensors in my Fuel wheels coming off of my 2013 but they are a few years old so I had to order new sensors.

I upgraded my steel wheels to the TRD pro alloy wheels and knew the original sensors wouldn’t work (different angle). So I bought some OEM 20° sensors and took those to my tire installer. For whatever reason they couldn’t get them programmed and said they could use the aftermarket sensors they normally have which were Autel MX sensors. They’ve been working fine since install. I then just returned the OEM sensors.

My 20 Platinum has after market TMPS sensors from Tire Rack.com. Takes about 5 minutes to register the new sensors using an Autel TMPS programmer.

Mounted forward, mounted backward, mounted upside down. It doesn’t matter. That will not affect the operation of the TPMS sensor

That's what I would have thought. I'm going back to 4WP Monday and will see what they can do. If they can't, I may try another dealership.

UPDATE: Went to my 4WP 1K mile checkup appt yesterday. They went in and looked at how the TPMS sensors are mounted. They agree that the style of the wheel causes them to have to be mounted differently than the factory wheel. At the moment, they've reset the TPMS light and basically said, if that doesn't work, then they'd have to explore into going to a band type of TPMS sensor that mounts to the wheel itself as opposed to the valve stem. We shall see if this is truly the last reset.

Update: Few miles down the road, the TMPS Malfunction msg re-appears. Spoke to my 4WP contact and they are going to try aftermarket sensors that strap onto the rim as opposed to being connected to the valve stem. When those arrive and get installed, we shall see if this does the trick!
