TPMS is not letting me set PSI; dirty collision sensor message

Hello Yota fans

Im located in TX, Houston area and I just bought a 21 tundra with lots of mods. My brother has a 1st gen tundra also with lots of mods and he's a member here so I wanted to join since he says it's a great community for information and help with our trucks.

I wanted to see if anyone recognized my Tundra. Just wanted to see if previous owner was here. It has some little issues that I'm hoping I can fix easily or just have to bite the bullet and go to the stealership.

 

Nice truck. What are the issues?

 

- A message pops up saying the collision sensor dirty. I'm assuming the sensors where moved because of the grill and bumper.

- TPMS is not letting me set PSI.

 

I always thought the collision sensor was part of that Toyota emblem on the factory grill. I’d also guess they never bothered to put pressure sensors in the new wheels.

 

That is what I'm thinking in regards to TPMS. As for the PSC I haven't had a chance to see if it was unplugged or just was not done correctly.

 

Post a pic of one of the valve stems. If the sensor was unplugged you would have multiple errors and lights. Follow the connector from the top of the grille area and see where it is mounted to start with.

 

The TSS sensor is definitely part of the original Toyota emblem so either previous owner removed it completely or check behind the lower part of the grille to see if they epoxied it to that. You should see the plug under the small panel on the top part of the grill.

Avoid the dealership at all costs!

99.9% sure that’s a regular valve stem.

 

Figured that, also I was reading that 20/21 are very picky with TPMS. Some say only OEM works and there are different sensor for steel and aluminum wheels.

 

Sensors for steel and aluminum/alloy have different angles due to wheel shape. There were also sensor changes in the 2020+ models so older sensors won't work in the later model years and vice versa.

 

Thanks for the clarification, I have to get new rubber so I'll order new TPMS to give to tire shop. I see rock auto has some deom $27- $75 all are 315MHz. I looked up oem and I believe I saw them around $85. I'm assuming that's the best bet.

 

I had the older versions so I can't help with that part. I know several members here have swapped wheels and TPMS sensors to have the info.

 

What do you mean 'not letting you set PSI'?
Are they not reading your tire pressure?

I wonder if that's what he meant too Maybe he's not able to access the TPMS display. I recently had an issue with my TPMS where it was telling me to visit the dealer; yeah right!. Found the problem to be one of mine completely broken off inside the tire

Correct ....that is a regular valve stem. TPMS sensors will have a mounting sleeve

 

Sorry should have been more Detailed. I can scroll to the PSI menu but it displays --. So I checked my sir pressure and used the set button to see if I recalibrate the reading.

 

I also thought that but I also saw some on Rock auto without metal sleeves.

 

Do you have the orange light on as well or just the dashes where the pressure should be?

Also I was digging around and trying to find the collision sensor and found the previous owner used a AJT relocation bracket. So my question is maybe the sensor is dirty if so how do I can it?

 

The AJT relocation brackets are hit or miss. My bet is that it has nothing to do with dirt. It COULD be that the letters on the grill are blocking the sensor and you may have to move it down a tad. Some have never had an issue following relocation and some have gotten consistent errors. I tried the AJT and it was always throwing errors so I switched to the Jomax and have never had an issue. Sadly, they don't make them anymore. Many people have tried to figure out the issue but have been largely unsuccessful, going so far as shaving the top plate down, etc. You might want to try to fabricate something but may need to get recalibrated.

 

Since you have the orange light it's a very good chance that those are the regular valve stems. Swing by a tire store and they can scan one to see if it picks up a sensor. On another note, the 2020 and newer are very sensitive to what sensors work. Most aftermarket will not so OEM is the best way to go.

I believe it's what most people are doing when upgrading to the pre 2019 Pro grille.

I would probably look for a less permanent adhesive though in case you ever want to remove it.

 

As mentioned, the AJT kit is the culprit. Moth of them do not work. It has a very thick cover plate but even a thinner cover usually doesn't work. You can try moving the kit down a little but it's a hit and miss. Jomax is the holy grail and are very rare to find. I got lucky finding one myself.

 

Thank you, I'm going to take grill off unplug battery to reset anything and then drive around with no grill and see if everything works good. If it does then I'll try and relocate the sensor

 

No need to disconnect the battery. Those errors clear when the cause clears. The grille is not affecting the sensor. Its that AJT kit.

 

Sounds like I need a Jomax, I try and find a picture of one and send to my brother and maybe be can design and 3dprint one. Any Pictures of one would help.

 

Never heard of Jomax, been on the fence between which Pro grille I want to get but I have TSS. So Jomax is hard to come by? How does it mount?
