Really?! They call it the "Trail Edition" and don't add anything that makes it handle trails better? Available in 2WD?

Good thing they added the super desirable chrome grill from the Limited trim. I mean, I wanted that extra chrome, but I've never been able to figure out how to get it without all those terrible interior upgrades.(sarcasm in case you can't tell)

More like tailgating edition if you ask me. Trinkets and baubles.

Nothing to see here folks... move along. Toyota's just doing some research on how trivial the enhancements in their trim packages can be before people ignore them and just wait for the next platform update.

I don't think we need Bentley, but maybe not some weak ass trial edition with street tires, nothing new and of course Toyota insistence that a combination of chrome and color match somehow looks good.

So for me I guess, is yes I want some innovation, higher quality materials that actually match each other (my 50K+ platinum has many shades of blacks, and a hodge podge of other colors, etc). the painted control area under the radio and then the "machined look" on the radio neither of which match anything else or each other is the biggest offender as an example.

if they want to go the other way and just solely focus on QDR and basic models, then that's fine too, but stop raising the cost so much.

In the high trims, they need to step up the game as we get closer and closer to 55-60K. then have the base models stay cheaper and more simple.

just my .02, so throw it out if you want, no biggie.

Are you referring to the ram box? Have you seen the size of a bed with ram boxes?

I had Ramboxes on my Ram I had. I loved them, I could haul all my tools, supplies, tons of stuff. They locked and unlocked with the key fob, had LED lighting, drain hole, fishing and gun racks.

    outstanding design.

plywood and sheet rock still went in the bed flat between the wheel wells. you could get a longer bed with them as well even on the crewcab

    I really miss that.

I would take those new tundra boxes over what I have now, which is nothing for storage. I just have a rubber tote will all my stuff in it in the bed.

do we know if you can still get plywood or Sheetrock down flat between them? that's kinda the age old test of functionality.

one thought, with how tall the tundra is (thankfully), I wonder how access will be for reaching over the bed and into the box, that's a long way. Im 6'3" and have arms like an orangatang so it would like work but the exterior ram box set up seemed better.

lets see some more info on them when it comes out.

It just seems like Ram utilizes the inner fender well whereas Toyota's "boxes" are completely standalone. From the pictures, doesn't look like you could fit a sheet of plywood in between the boxes, where you can with a Ram.

Yep just some new Trail Edition crap. Built in storage and removable 40 qt ice chest in bed. Comes in 4 colors. Tundra, Tacoma, and 4 Runner. Cosmetic crap mostly. I got and email on it.

To be fair it looks like it doesn't go any further inboard than the wheel wells already do. You can fit a sheet of plywood between the wheel wells with any pickup on the market. I think the Tundra bed is 50" between the wheel wells.

I don't think it's poorly executed. I just have a problem with Toyota's prioritization of this over something like a rear locker.

Never figured Toyotas logic on rear locker for Tacoma but not Tundra. Did not use a lot with 4x4 Tacoma but used it often on 2wd.

lol “we’ve adopted an off-road tire”. Then talks about the grill etc

these are the types of things that have me concerned about the next gen, chrome and street tires are not improvements Toyota

It is easy to forget that toyota isn’t marketing to truck enthusiasts, but rather general auto purchasers who’s knowledge of their vehicle includes only how to put gas in it.
    That said:

Toyota, you have a Trd offroad package that includes a locking rear diff on the tacoma. Isn’t that your trail package?

From his explanation in the video it sounds like they consider the "Trail Edition" to fit between the SR5 and TRD Offroad packages. (I'll just ignore that fact that most TRD Offroad trucks are also in SR5 trim.)

Since the TRD Offroad package is just shocks, wheels, engine skid, front recovery points and stickers they didn't really set a very high bar for themselves on this one.

"Trail Edition" sounds like it should be more than TRD Offroad to all of us, but I guess they're trying to attract the "Careful!! Don't scratch my bed!" crowd. You know, the ones that drive Honda's version of the El Camino right now.

Exactly this. They have to do something so this is the most low effort change they can make before the big one.

I think one thing these bed storage tells us is the next gen bed is going to be the same. They wouldn't have made a new stowage system that fits the soon to be retired generation.

The bedsides could be different but the inner shell might be the same dimensions to accommodate the toolbox option.

Those bed boxes are pretty pathetic to look like an option just stuck inside the bed. Could easily be integrated as others have stated

Well, they are just stuck inside the bed.

And miss aftermarket revenue from people adding them to their current truck?

Luv'm or hate'm. Doesn't seem to be any middle ground does it?

I think the current gen Titan has bed boxes that look just like what Toyota did. I'm with the others, the amount these are going to cost they could of gave the option of a rear locker and pleased more people. These boxes don't look that useful...Imo, pretty small looking once opened up.

Nothing wrong with aftermarket revenue. But a chicago auto show reveal for a bolt on accessory is pretty sad. Thats not innovative.
These are first world problems of course. The only reason toyota can do this is because we have the finest truck product
