I believe I have more pictures of this Tercel from a later date, and this picture is making it into the thread because I am a huge fan of Despicable Me, and more specifically the Minions!

I actually do like these 1992-1998 Tercels because they never let you forget you are driving a cheap commuter appliance/econobox, but in typical Toyota fashion they are damn near bombproof in terms of reliability! This one was a turd, and the interior gave the appearance that the owner lived in the car; It ended up getting abandoned, hauled away on a flatbed, and likely sold for scrap...

In Pennsylvania, dealerships are not allowed to open for business on Sunday due to blue laws; As such, this is a great state in which to go and browse car lots on Sundays, because you won't get hassled by salespeople! These pictures are from a car lot adventure over three years ago; I'm guessing the local dealer had bought a bunch of previously fleet-owned 2011-2012 Siennas because I had never seen so many used Siennas on their lot at one time! All of these Siennas were lower-end trim levels, but they had they nicer wheels as well as backup cameras, and I thought the asking price for each van was pretty reasonable...

My cousin bought her second Toyota (her first was an '06 Scion xA) brand new after almost three years of driving a Honda CRV; It is a white 2017 RAV4 XLE AWD. This picture was taken in the parking lot our hotel during a family trip (she noticed she'd parked next to an identical white RAV and posed for a picture; I forget which one is hers)...

It is hard to find pre-2004 (1st Gen) Sienna minivans in even remotely decent condition these days, especially now since the newest ones are now approaching twenty years old! As such, I photograph decent examples when the opportunity presents itself...

My Grandma's 2002 Lexus RX300 Coach Edition, which she bought brand new in the summer of 2002 and drove for more than 16 years; It had less than 90K original miles on the clock when she sold it to a family friend...

There was absolutely nothing wrong it with aside from the fact that it needed a thorough detailing, which I did myself before she sold it; The biggest reason I didn't want it is because it did not have all-wheel drive; This is a front-wheel drive model, purchased from a dealership in South Florida. At the time my Grandma bought the RX, she was spending summers in Maine and winters in Florida, so she never needed AWD and my uncle talked her out of buying an AWD model. We have driven this in the snow before, and it actually did pretty damn good in my opinion!

Again, my Grandma's RX was purchased in South Florida; As such, the two features it did not have that are generally sought after in the Northeast were AWD and heated seats. It also did not have navigation, but my grandma needed a vehicle immediately and the fact that it was a Coach Edition with Coach luggage included sold her! She paid cash and drove it for more than 15 years! Her previous car was a 1987 Mercedes 300E that she also bought new and had barely 90K miles on it despite being 15 years old (anybody else see a pattern?); The A/C in the Mercedes leaked Freon and would have required a lot of money to fix, and a bigger deciding factor was that my grandpa was sick and had a hard time getting in and out of the Mercedes. My grandma and grandpa both agreed that an SUV would be better, and my dad, my uncle, and I all gave our opinions; The RX300 was her final choice, and it literally needed nothing but tires, oil changes, and batteries during the time 16+ years my grandma owned it so I'd say it was a pretty damn solid vehicle!

If I were in need of a vehicle, and my grandma offered the Lexus to me at a discounted price or just gave it to me for free, I would have taken it in a heartbeat; However, being a 2002 model, it does not have features like a backup camera or Bluetooth. My 2010 Tacoma did not come with these features, but installing a stereo system that incorporated them was incredibly easy! My grandma wanted a backup camera and an automatic liftgate; An automatic liftgate was not feasible, but I looked into installing a backup camera. I estimated the total cost of a backup camera and required double-DIN head unit at around $400-$600 and she was willing to pay it; However, the 1999-2003 RX300 is an audiophile's nightmare! There no aftermarket bezels/retrofit kits that allow for the installation of an aftermarket head unit; The factory radio and HVAC controls are integrated into a very vehicle-specific unit.

I discovered a thread on a Lexus forum from 2006 where an owner of a 2001 RX300 managed to fabricate his own dash bezel and install a double-DIN touch screen head unit, and if the Lexus were mine I would have totally gone this route; However, this was more trouble than I was willing to deal with for a vehicle that wasn't mine, and more money than my grandma wanted to spend. The Lexus was sold to a family friend in Kentucky who owned another older RX300 that he absolutely loved; Go figure, within weeks of buying my grandma's RX300 he was calling me asking if I knew how to install a head unit and backup camera in an RX300...

This is why I will NEVER buy an RX300; As I stated above, they are a worst nightmare for a guy like myself who is so into aftermarket car audio! They are GREAT cars in terms of styling, build quality, reliability, and longevity; But, the RX300 radio became obsolete over a decade ago in my opinion! Thankfully, all RX300s (1999-2003) did have a cassette player, so this allowed the use of a car kit adapter to play an iPod or other MP3 player through the stereo system; My grandma's Lexus had the optional 6-disc CD changer (inconveniently located in the glovebox), but it DID NOT have the optional Mark Levinson speakers. Despite having only the standard 6-speaker system, I always thought the sound quality was really good; That Lexus was a great vehicle for driving around blasting classic rock with the windows down and the sunroof open!

The stereo in my grandma's RX300 is still decent by today's standards, but my Tacoma totally surpassed it in 2018 when my neighbor helped me install a subwoofer and amp! The only factory systems in vehicles costing less than about $40K that are remotely up to par with what I've presently got in my Tacoma are the factory JBL systems in my friend's mom's 2007 Camry Hybrid and my aunt's 2009 RAV4, and the Bose system in my dad's 2018 GMC Yukon SLT! The Camry and the RAV4 have 3.5mm AUX jacks but no USB inputs, and the while the stereo systems really crank when pushed to their limits, they sound a bit dull compared to the quality of a USB port...

My mom's 2013 Nissan Murano SV has a factory Bose system with a USB port, but the sound quality is rather muddy in my opinion and lacks "oomph" (bass). The Murano's stereo has to be cranked all the way up to its max volume to match the same power my Tacoma's aftermarket stereo has at 10 to 18 (volume in both the Tacoma and the Murano goes up to 40, I believe); The Bose system in dad's Yukon sounds much better than the one in the Murano, and I've tried to talk my dad into installing a subwoofer to give it that extra oomph, but he won't go for it.

My best friend's 2006 Nissan Maxima SL (which he bought it in 2010 and traded for an Altima in 2016) had a factory Bose system with a cassette player and 6-CD changer, as well as Bluetooth, but no AUX input; This did not matter...

A car kit cassette adapter was just fine, and when we plugged our iPods into that tape deck that system likely exceeded the quality of what I have in the Tacoma!

The 2013 Altima he traded the Maxima for had a Bose system that was decent but nowhere near what the outgoing Maxima had; He traded the Altima for a used 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe just over a year ago, and the Hyundai has the upgraded stereo (I forget whether it's Harman/Kardon or Infinity). The stereo in the Hyundai sounds pretty damn good, but my friend did not realize until after he bought the vehicle and drove it home that it DID NOT have a CD player; My friend is an accomplished guitar player and in general a huge music enthusiast, and he misses being able to listen to his sizeable CD collection in his vehicle!

Another guy I know bought a brand new Audi RS8 a couple years ago ($220K), and after hearing the stereo in my Tacoma, he says his factory Bang & Olufsen system isn't as good! I have like $800 total in my stereo as it sits right now, and my system can completely destroy the factory systems in vehicles costing over fifty grand...
