Probably a good time to remove/disconnect the aftermarket remote start.

If I was at home I’d absolutely go that route. I looked and can’t get a scan tool delivered here til Wednesday. But what I’m afraid of is if that isn’t the issue, then that puts me behind getting this fixed. What I don’t want happening is my truck not being ready to go by Saturday. Luckily we are in a beach town that rents golf carts, so I’ve got transportation around town at least.

Has it been smelling rich on startup?

Once it started up after the initial no start, it definitely smelled rich. It was parked next to my 72 Duster at the time, so I thought it was just the old car smell from that, but it was definitely coming from the Tundra.

Pull the negative battery cable over night. When you reconnect in the morning, be sure all connections are tightened well. Turn on the truck, but don’t start for at least 5 seconds. After 5 seconds, start the truck and let idle for 5 min. This resets all the trans and motor learned values, plus the ethanol content values. Reason for idling 5 minutes so it relearns LTFT’s and smooths out the STFT’s. Once that cycle is complete, drive normally.

The tow truck pulled away 10 minutes ago, so it’s on the way to Sparks. I appreciate that input, I will try that if this happens again!

Do you have anything documenting this process will zero out values? I’ve never heard of this method working for ethanol reset. It certainly works for idle and learning shift patterns but I believe people have documented it not working for the alcohol density issue.

I bet this ends up being the ethanol percentage problem as several posters here have stated. New fuel pump rarely helps but is expensive. Resetting the ethanol percentage fixes the problem until the level creeps back up again. Having a bidirectional scanner that can read and reset the percentage is what most have had success with. The ECU update may help as well.

I told the service advisor I’d like for them to check the ethanol values first. If this is going to be a long term issue, then I’ll be investing in a better scan tool. Right now all I have is a cheap one.

Got a call from Sparks. They’re saying my fuel pump is overheating and has shorted out my ecu. So both need to be replaced. Apparently it’s not an ethanol percentage issue.

Or that’s just way more profitable for them… @ToyoMafia waited almost a year for them to do the fuel pump and got the truck back with the same problem it went in with. We’ve seen tons of these…

Not really much you can do when it’s in their hands but it’s the same issue that entire other thread is filled with.

Yeah, I hear ya. They kinda have me by the balls since I’m on vacation and need my truck fixed. He made it sound like both parts are fried.

Y’all have any recommendations on who to call at Toyota to see if I can fight to at least get this covered under the TSB?

I’m with you, I’m going to look into a scan tool that can reset the ethanol percentages for if this happens again.

By that link, Toyota should then cover this, right?

That’s the way I read it. 15 years unlimited mileage and your vehicle is in the covered vehicles.

You’ll probably need to cite the specific program…

It’s nice how Toyota puts in red and bold that service providers are prohibited from letting customers know their fuel pump is subject to fail and covered under an extended warranty program.

Spoke with Sparks and Toyota Corporate and got nowhere. Apparently my vin isn’t listed in the specific Customer Support Program and they will not cover it. I asked to speak to someone higher and they would not, they just connected me with Sparks again. Extremely frustrating that a known issue that should be a recall isn’t being covered. They told me the best they could do is have me save my receipt so if Toyota adds my truck to the program they can reimburse me then. I’ve been a loyal Toyota owner for 2 decades and this is really leaving a bad taste in my mouth with them.
