Toyota says oil change every 10k mi

    I agree but that is irrelevant to Toyota so if you have a FFV and want to make sure you keep your warranty in tact it’s every 5.

    I see these recommendations on oil change intervals and the supposedly indistructable, unfailing, everlasting WS transmission fluid and I can't help but think that some fast talker in Toyota marketing convinced the decision makers that it's better to make the EPA happy with a maintenance schedule fairy tail than to publish the actual recommendations from Toyota engineering.

    Fortunately for their customers the build quality allows them to get by with it and still out last their competitors, but how much longer would these trucks last with a more realistic maintenance schedule?

    I don't think that the two 1 million mile Tundras waited 10k miles between oil changes.

    I guess I'm officially old and stuck in my ways on this one because I can't wait any longer than 5k miles between oil changes regardless of what Toyota says.

    I know technology advances and it's possible that longer intervals could be safe now, but I haven't seen any explanation about what changed so that motor oil now lasts 2-3 times longer than it did before. "It's synthetic so it's better" just doesn't cut it for me. I use it, but I can't leave it in for more than 5k miles without the fear of ruining my engine.

    Word on the street is that at over 200k your supposed to change oil every 5. Can anyone confirm or deny?

    Amsoil tested their oil for 20k miles. Look it up before you start criticizing.

    Toyota can make up whatever oil change recommendations they want. Guess what, they don’t pay for your truck.

    Change it how you feel comfortable. I change my oil every 4k miles. I do almost 100% city driving which is harder on oil than cruising on the highway. Ive never tested it, but the oil comes out black as hell after 4k miles. No way in hell i would wait until 10k. I want the truck to last til 250k miles, so buying some oil more often is cheap insurance

    I drove my first tundra (2004 Double Cab) over 318k miles. I never used synthetic motor oil. I bought my truck new with 6 miles. Then for the last 3 years I changed the oil every year. I dogged it and that engine still runs smooth ( 4.7L). Think about that.

    Paying three times as much for oil changes hurts the wallet.
    for 30,000 miles instead of 3 oil changes you would have gotten 10.
    Ill follow the manufacturer recommended schedule with manufacturer recommended product.
    Maybe Id change early after some heavy use but doing three times as many changes as the manufacturer recommends is a waste of money and time IMO.

    I've never heard of a 5.7L engine gone bad from lack of oil changes.

    1 million mile tundra had 117 oil changes. Thats one every 8500 miles. The proof is in the pudding! granted its a 4.7 but the principal is the same. It was a work truck used to haul large and heavy oil tanker parts.

    Exactly. Some guys here are paranoid about maintenance schedules on their trucks. I wouldn't throw money away, save it for mods.

    Agreed @619Tundra on that note have you seen those oil bypass filters? Supposedly you can run the same oil for a really long time without it degrading.

    I drove my 2004 4.7 L thru hell. The truck is still going strong. I sold the truck. I also ran 17x10 rims with 35" BGFs from day 1.

    I’ll bet the 1 million mile Tundras did go 10,000. If they were doing 5,000 they would have been changing oil every two weeks.
    I change at 5. But, only because that’s what the schedule is for FFV engines.

    The video said 117 oil changes. which is an average of 8,547 Miles. 1,000,000/117=8,547.0085 Im sure at least a few of those are 10,000 mile jobs.

    BTW. The notion that there is a synthetic filter vs dino is hilarious in itself. there are filters made of synthetic materials, and there are filters that have higher filtration capabilities. That's it.

    Thanks for this clarification, Jengel. The ‘synthetic’ filters sold as ‘’for synthetic oil’ are marketed to deliver higher price tags to those willing to pay for it. The ‘for synthetic oil’ filters usually capture smaller particulate (30 microns) and, by design, will clog faster. The clog induces the bypass valve and now you get no filtration.

    The paper ‘dino oil’ filters capture around 40 micron level. A mid-interval change of just the filter is cheap insurance if you want to run long oil intervals.

    One is the OEM Toy (larger capacity) and the smaller ‘Mobil1 High Efficiency/Capacity’ filter. I prefer the OEM as its much larger and cost less by half. Fresh oil never hurts, but old oil does.

    For the naysayers: My DIY oil changes cost about $22 using the OEM Toy filter and Mobil1 Synthetic (with rebate). $66 a year for oil changes. Cheap insurance changing every 3k miles. I see some of you ‘saving for mods’ costing way more than $66 that will do long term damage to your trucks from suspension/tires/various hacks, etc. and then spend more money chasing the fix. What costs more?

    Obviously, to each their own but I think your 3 thousand mile oil change interval is a complete waste of money and while we can never prove this I would bet anything if we tore our engines down at 150,000 miles there would be no extra wear or issues with oil being changed at 5 or even 10,000.

    I say that they are understandably paranoid. That is because Mama Toyota has issued "blurry" recommendations. They have HAD TO make those recommendations because the gosh damn guvmunt has made them, and therefore made us, get into the stupid ethanol game. If it wasn't for the gosh damn benevolent imperial federal guvmunt goat-roping us into stupid corn we wouldn't be having this stupid discussion. There would simply be an engine oil change interval for regular use and one for severe use. DONE.

    But I totally get it if you want to run on the side of what you consider "caution" with your engine oil change interval. There are folks who wear their tires into and half way through the wear bar indicators ("street slicks!!!!!!"). And others who stop well short of the wear bars.

    Some like a potato. Some like a tomato.

    Me? I hate corn!!!

    Yea, I’m not trying to argue either but your post talked about all these MODs people do that you see etc. Well, those same people see their MODs as a good way to spend their money. Not to mention you drive it appears 9,000 miles a year. Pretty easy to justify 3,000 at that pace and if you feel it’s worth your money and gives you peace of mind then it’s a worthy thing to do.

    I’ve read some posts of a former dealer of Amsoil saying the product cost/benefit isn’t worth it. He states its a great product, but would rather do more frequent changes with less costly oil.

    As I've said a million times. Facts a data always trumps hearsay and speculation.

    Go 10K. Dump the oil and send a sample to Blackstone labs for $35 ask for TBN report and you'll know EXACTLY what you can and can't do. Hell, I'd do 12k just to see how it looked.
