Yep...I googled some of those part numbers on that sheet...... Most technicians are changing the harness because they have to, not because they want to. I've seen some of them....lazy as hell.

Does anyone have a technical write up on what should done for this recall? I had it done a few weeks ago and it took the tech about 2.5 hrs to complete. It looks like they spliced in a new wiring harness from the main harness that runs below your headlights up to the headlight socket. Maybe about 12" long in total. I just wanted to be sure I got the correct fix because I'm not seeing a few thousand in repairs done.

Your repair seems to be the consensus for what everyone else has had done so far. Any way to get a picture of the repair? I'm curious to see their splice work capabilities lol.

Lol. It's something to laugh at for sure. I should have taken pics. I will see if I can pop one side off this weekend and get a picture. The repair looks to be done by a crappy stereo shop tech.

Definitely post pics. A crappy non-environmental splice will open a can of worms for corrosion if in the right climate. If it looks like crap, I'll make some anonymous phone calls. I'm good friends with a manger at my dealership. :spy:

I ran and grabbed some crappy pics from behind the fog light so I couldn't get close or take the electrical tape (not harness tape) off to get good access to the splices. I'll get better ones when I clean it up.

I found these on TT during a search. He said relays were added.

Keep in mind, recall and warranty work goes to end of the stack for a dealer mechanic, because they only get set time and pay to work on it. Many times, they give these to the new guys whenever possible. Had a friend in the biz…

@Tundra234 - don’t you have a Morimoto conversion on your rig? Wondering if I should just pay Colton and get a set with a new harness. Yikes!

    From NHTSA notice:
    “Description of Corrective Repair Action:
For all involved vehicles, Toyota dealers will modify the engine wire harness assembly and inspect the headlight bulb connector, bulb, and headlight assembly. If one or more of these components is found to be damaged due to this overheating condition, the damaged component(s) will be replaced with new ones as needed.“

Yes I have the Morimotos. The question has come up quite often regarding the factory harness and converting to LEDs. I created this post just a few minutes ago to try and get some input from our smart electrical guys.

So my question, does every vehicle affected by the recall have to have the splicing done (or have any work done)? Based on what I've read, I'm not fully understanding.

I ask because I had them perform the visual inspection of my harness and the documentation for the recall just says "visual inspection: successful" no notes about damage or discoloration or needing anything done to my harness. Asked my service advisor (normally he's pretty knowledgeable and not one of the useless ones) and he thinks this means I'm done with the recall and they won't need to do anything else to my truck.

They really should do it. Just because it hasn't shown evidence yet, doesn't mean that it won't in the future. It's known that the harness was manufactured incorrectly, so they really should fix it.

Here the thing that I don’t understand and I raised this concern with the Toyota rep. Like you said, they visually inspected your harness, they found nothing wrong with it. This doesn’t mean that down the line it can still happen. In your case, since they checked it off as no problem found and your truck does catch fire latter on, well that opens up a lawsuit up for Toyota. If the part can be faulty at some point in its service life, it should be replaced. That’s the way I see it.

See, that was my thought. I switched to the Pro headlights to limit my chance but I still rather get the harness fixed. Also if I sell in the future and halogens go back in, don't want the next owner to have it go up in flames.

I'll press them for more info and depending what they say I'll follow up with the recall department.

You have nothing to worry about. The LEDs consume less amps and don’t heat up as much as the halogens. The issue with the harness is that the low and high are on at the same time when you activate the high beams. That creates a tremendous amount of heat. That’s why it melts the bulb plug and wires which leads to a fire. Not to mention that the plug connects directly to the bulb. With the LED headlight it’s not a direct connection regardless. As for the next owner, I understand your concern. But I don’t think Toyota will do anything if nothing is wrong. Which I think is bullshit. Like said, they can’t guarantee that it will never happen just because it hasn’t happened yet and your harnes looks good.

Just picked up on this thread and I am going to try it right now. Swapped mine for the LEDs with the iHacker harness soon after I bought the truck. At first I ignored the recall but now thinking this might just work :fingerscrossed: Thanks EarlyRiser!

Last update was the one I posted on post #288. You replied to a few post down. I am thinking of re-submitting a 3rd claim just because I am not satisfied with their resolution. I just got back from a weeks vacation and catching up on stuff, but will get around to it this week if I don't forget.

Received the attached response from Toyota after a couple months. Anyone here receive a similar response to Item #1 that installed the iHacker harness and TRD Pro LEDs themselves?

    Too many, but not enough....
I got this exact same response from them and did all the work myself. I just said Eff it at that point since the way they structured that letter, they wont pay for a repair if you did it yourself by the looks of it.

The original submission before they cleared their website was alot more vague and open ended, they essentially just asked for proof you owned the truck and how much the repaired components cost.

Thanks. I guess there's no point in continuing this claim. In the same boat as a lot of other...did the mod not knowing that I was saving myself from a recall down the road.
