As the OEM, you have to think like the dumbest average driver thinks. I know plenty of people that have ran their tank dry thinking they had enough left to get to the next gas station. By keeping a 'reserve' it gently guides the end user to fill up 'early' and avoid this situation occurring.

People get upset when their vehicle 'fails' them whether it's due to the vehicle or the person in the driver's seat. I can totally understand why Toyota wants to minimize the number of customers complaining/claiming early warranty after their fuel pump crapped out from being ran dry one too many times.

Lol, if 6 gallons reserve on 32 gallon tank is approx 19%.

What's the reserve on the 22? 4.2 gallons? Those ppl driving around with what 300 +/- DTE?

That puts range anxiety right in line with ev owners lol

The 26.4 gallon tank in my 2007 is good for about 300 miles before the fuel light comes on, and all I ever manage to put in is about 19.5 gallons.

The small fuel tank is my #1 complaint with that truck in the 15 years I’ve owned it.

wtf, it was never program like this on my 89 camry or 97 4runner, or i was just young and never bothered to track that, once the light came on - I looked for closest gas station, fuck the nonsense driving 1/2 town over to save 5cents a gallon.

With a supercharger and 35s my MPG/etc. calculations are so far off its hilarious. However my fuel gauge is now a compass.

I'm a half tank guy. Don't know why. Probably something my dad told me 30 years ago.

It’s likely that some asshat sued Toyota for running out of gas and got stranded because the alert didn’t notify them in time to stop for fuel. So they landed on the DTE value that is super conservative. I rarely let mine get under 1/4 tank anyway. There are other things to worry about

Go grab a canoe, set it on a “flat” surface, and put a brick in the very middle of it (usually the deepest part of your flat bottomed “old town”).

Next, pour 5 gallons of water in the canoe. Brick is a little wet yes?

Lift one end of your canoe just barely high enough to stick a different brick under that end (let’s call the bow).

What happens to the water around the first brick?

I'm coming from a 3500 Chevy with 55 gallon fuel tank, and I know it can go just a hair under E. I can get it down to about 1-2 gallons left in the tank. I drive from Chicago to the east coast often, and don't like making extra fuel stops.

My Tundra range says low fuel, and the bar shows empty. I fill it up, and it takes 26 gallons. That's just not right.

I fill up whenever I feel necessary to fill up. In my case it's usually around a half tank. I don't care what the DTE is or how many gallons it takes. I'm not being robbed of fuel because some numbers on my dash don't add it. People get way too deep into the weeds with these estimation calculations in new vehicles that makes them forget how simple it really needs to be.

For the argument that you need to know range in case you're driving in a remote area, then be better prepared and either map our your stops or bring a jerry can. Beats walking.

This reminds me of the recall work we just had done to my wife's Highlander. It needed a software update to make the DTE readout & fuel gauge more conservative because quite a few people were running out of fuel. This amazed me because I'm the guy who always pushes it figuring there's a pretty decent reserve and I never ran her car out of gas.
