Thanks. I've heard the extended warranty is a sucker bet with it being a Toyota but wonder if it is a good idea if you plan on owning it a long time.

I tell you what though. My pre-collision system and TSS safety harness went out after 1000 miles. without the warranty it would have cost about $3000 to fix.

Isn't that covered by the 2 year, 36k initial warranty given?

Yes it was. I’m saying if it was outside that 3/36 warranty.

I purchased my Toyota Plat coverage on my 2011 Tacoma in month 32. You have that amount of time (before the 36 month bumper to bumper expires) to decide to get an extended warranty or forgo it. Plus...It was quite a bit less expensive for the exact same Toyota warranty that was offered when I bought the truck.

    jerryj@MidwestSuperstore.com

Jerry sold me my extended warranty on my Tacoma.

Here is the info he sent me when I purchased it:

Here is the Price List for your 2011 Tacoma DCab 4X4

    T3-TOYOTA TACOMA 4X4,
    5 YEAR 80,000 MILES $474.00,
    **5 YEAR 100,000 MILES $629.00
    5 YEAR 125,000 MILES $799.00

    6 YEAR 75,000 MILES $509.00, **6 YEAR 100,000 MILES $749.00
    6 YEARS 125,000 MILES $1,019.00

    7 YEARS 75,000 MILES $594.00,
    **7 YEAR 100,000 MILES $889.00
    7 YEARS 125,000 MILES $1,169.00

    8 YEAR 75,000 MILES $709.00
    **8 YEARS 100,000 MILES $1,039.00
    8 YEAR 125,000 MILES $1,424.00

This warranty is directly from Toyota and any warranty work will need to
be done at your Toyota dealer or any Toyota dealer in your state or any
state in the USA or Canada
Please feel free to give me a call I would be happy to go over the
    warranty with you.
    Thank you so much

    Welcome from Cleveland, Ohio!

Since I put a lot of miles on my Tundras I purchased a 6 year 125,000 mile Toyota Platinum for $1500.00 for me it made sense since my 08 Tundra had the air intake blowers go and they were a $2500.00 cost each time. They went bad twice and both times they were covered under warranty.

It’s just a piece of mind for me.

Just do like me. Wait until your top of the reliability field Tundra springs a cam tower leak at 14,000 miles. Then bitch and moan to Toyota corporate about how pathetic that is. Then they give you a 100,000 mile warranty for nothing.

    Welcome!!

OP, you still owe us a pic of your truck, you aren’t off the hook bud!

About warranties, Some of you seem to know quite a bit in the subject... so...

I did not buy an extended warranty for my Taco, I am re-thinking that decision. can I purchase one later from Toyota? Is it something that the price can be negotiated?

Yes as long as the current is not expired. Look a few threads above. There are usually forums guys that work at Toyota that give deals.

So here is my question; if I buy the 7 year warranty, does it extend 7 years past when the 3/36 expires (giving me 10 years total), or only 4 years past the 3/36?

Are these Toyota warranties or aftermarket?

The dealer I bought my truck at will not sell a Toyota warranty they sell a warranty from a company called genesis

I was told it’s better than the Toyota warranty. I passed on it since I don’t believe it.

    Costs was $2800 for a 80,000 6 year.

    Nuts I say.

Damn that sucks, so essentially you are paying for 3 years that’s already given to you.

If one were to wait until closer to the end of the 3/36, I wonder how much the cost of the warranty increases.

grats on the new vehicle :)

I view extended warranties as an insurance policy. you may never need it, but when you do, you will be glad that it is there. however, these vehicles have such great reliability, that it probably isn't necessary. so when I bought my tundra, I went into the finance office thinking that I was not going to get one. but the finance guy kept lowering the price and upping the warranty terms that I could not pass up the deal. I got an 8 year, 80k mile, zero deductible warranty for $800. I also got zero percent financing, so for an extra $13 a month on a 5 year loan, I am totally covered for 8 years.

Welcome from OK. A family friend of ours has been driving Toyota's for a few decades now and he said he always buys the extended warranty right before the regular warranty runs out. He said he's had to use it a couple of times for various issues and that it was worth it.

Reviving an old thread for my first post!

Bought a 19 Tundra 4x4 yesterday and turned down the warrenty but having 2nd thoughts. I bought it on my 2013 4Runner I traded for it. I felt like I got pushed into it on the last one and avoided buying the new one mostly out of stubbornness, but it didn't sound like a bad deal.

$1,400 for a 8/100k no deductible, but at almost 4% of the purchase price it seemed high to me. Told him I would do it for $1k max otherwise would be tough to meet my 3 year pay off goal.
He tried to negotiate by taking a bit off the interest rate on the loan (but I was planning to re-fi anyway :) )
Also said that they would buy the warranty back at the end of the term if not used and would apply the balance to a new trade if I did it there.

Really only big ticket issue I'm worried about are the electronics, but I figured if the radio unit when out I could buy a better aftermarket one for less than $1,400

I would like to keep the truck indefinitely, but it is a purpose built type of vehicle and who knows how my needs may change in the future.

I don't recommend the aftermarket warranties for Toyota in general...one caveat: I added the TRD SC back when Toyota offered the SC as part of the bumper to bumper warranty, therefore I did purchase the 7/125 to de-risk/piece of mind. I will hit the 7 year point long before the 125. Still 3 years to go.

Actually starting to think the "buy it back if you don't use it" will be kind of a scam as well. Just like insurance after paying all that money, if you do have a issue and say it cost $600 to fix and you have a $500 deductible you don't want to turn it in. Same here if say 3 years in you have an issue with the power door locks (as I did with the 4runner) do you really want to use the warranty for say $500 when you would get back $1400 if you don't use it? Would be the same bet each time and the farther towards the end the more it makes since to pay out of pocket, so in reality after paying a few hundred here and there you would end up not making use of it.

Great thread/information. I was recently contacted by Mountain States Toyota in Denver (where I bought the truck new) to upgrade my factory warranty. They quoted me $3,600 for to extend the warranty of my 2015 SR5 Crewmax for an additional 6-years or 60,000 miles (it's currently at about 34,000). It came out to about a $200 deposit and then $140 a month for 2-years (0% interest) for the "Premium Care" package. I didn't see an option for the "platinum" package everyone was referring too - I just see 1) premium care 2) select car 3) power care plus, and 4) power care coverage. Either way, I don't ever plan on selling my truck, so am wondering if it's worth it, but man $3,600 hurts! I could just set that money aside and pray to the Toyota gods nothing will go wrong. I also was in an accident at about 1,000 miles where they had to replace the entire frame (the only reason it wasn't totaled was because of the low mileage), so maybe it is worth getting the warranty in case something goes wrong down the road due to the repairs...

Bought one for my Wife's Venza, it paid for itself when 3 of the 4 door lock actuators failed and was covered with extended warrant and we still have 50k miles left on the warranty. It's a gamble, paid off in this case.

I would say yes and no on that as I had 2 fail on my 4Runner and it would have mostly paid for the warrenty if you go off their dealer pricing of $700 each time, but I found the part for around $100 and doubt it would be more than 2 hours of labor at a shop, but probably would have just done it myself.
