I just keep my truck stuff within the capabilities of my Tundra and don't worry about the drama of the Big 3. I can't afford to buy a new truck AND fix it all the time.

The seats are awful and the steering wheel disintegrates.
    Otherwise those were solid trucks!

The hilux is more on par with a Taco than a Tundra, isn't it?

Right, and I know they do all kinds of work out in the world, but I don't know how they'd be classed/rated here in the states.

i'd say hilux more like taco, land cruiser 70 series more in line with tundra.

I put over 200,000KMS on one for work, beating the crap out of it on lease roads. I found it super comfortable, a dream to drive and very reliable. My grandpa and 3 uncles had the same trucks on their farms and rancges with no problems either.

Not sure about the steering wheel thing. I've never had a leather wrapped steering wheel last more than a year. Even the one in The Woman's Corolla is flaking. Leather wrapped wheels just plain suck in general.

Really? My '03 was the 24v and that motor was the best thing about the truck. Pulled like nobodies business and good fuel economy, but the transmission just couldn't take the torque. If you had a lead foot or actually towed a lot you were going to be replacing transmissions every 80k-120k miles. The alternator was another weak point IMO.

The GMs I had all had those urethane wheels that eventually wore down to the metal wheel ring inside. They turned to powder and slowly just disintegrated. Never had a GM product with a leather wheel :monocle:

Not quite sure how I feel about that one. Kinda looks like a toy. Matchbox/Hot Wheels were the first things I thought of, but that's just me.

Your 2003 was considered the common rail motor. The 24V was considered the VP44 trucks.

The 03-04 Common Rail trucks were pretty solid machines except for the fueling system (lift pump was still on the back of the filter housing). I heard some early 2003 trucks had the 47RE craptastic transmission, but never actually met anyone that had one. Did yours have the 48RE or 47RE?

Been so long I'm not sure now. I am about 70% sure it was a 48RE.

My 2002 HO Dodge was a special case, southern truck that was sun beat to death. The dash had to be replaced and so did the blend door actuator. Other than that, interior was pretty solid.

Both my 2002 and 2004.5 Dodges had way more issues with fuel systems/injectors than the truck chassis. I was always told the truck would fall apart around the cummins motor. Not the case in both my trucks.

Most likely. I only heard rumor of it. I put a shift kit in mine to raise line pressure and it was doing pretty good up to 75K miles when I had to sell it.

    Well that's disappointing!
I've not had a diesel, but I've always heard the same thing. The dash is a hilarious fail on dodge's part:

I bought mine used with 136k miles on it, and it served me well for quite a while. Once I actually started to tow things with it, I started to get some issues.

I am not mechanic, not even shade tree, so I put aside the dollars to swap the transmission for one that had been beefed up for longevity. Took it to the shop/dealership that I was currently using to get price estimates for the work. They wound up convincing me to let them take a look at the truck first. Burned through my transmission fund because I was an idiot and listened to them about it being this, that, or the other issue instead of the transmission.

Long story short; I'll never patronize any of the dealerships that are affiliated with the one I went to, the truck left there with the same problem that I took it in with, and I was out of money and patience to deal with it. That experience is part of what made me put reliability at the absolute top of my list for my truck, and ultimately led me to Toyota.
