I saw a thing one time about the stupidest questions the rangers in Banff National Park have been asked. One was "what time do the bears pose for pictures?"

My wife's grandparents asked if you're supposed to spray the bear (i.e. pepper) spray on yourself or on the ground as you're walking.

spray your own eyes first, THEN, spray yourself to make a seasoning base for the bear. then lay out spread eagle position on the ground to make yourself look like a bigger meal for the bear...or to invite it for sex (depending if the bear has been laid in a while)

When I managed a fishing/hunting store, we sold duty boots to LE, fish cops, park rangers etc. One of my clients was a former ranger from Banff. The stories he told are the main reasons I support shutting parks like that down and confining city people from places with a populaiton over say 150K to within city limits forever.

"Mr. Ranger, can you go get the bear cub so my daughter can take a picture with it?"

"Mr. Ranger, I'm in the hospital because the elk kicked me. It kicked me because I tried to put my infant son on its back for a picture"

"Mr. Ranger, why can't I go pet the bison?"

"Mr. Ranger, the bear got into the food in my campsite. I demand compensation."

"Mr. Ranger, thank you for leaving your family on Christmas eve to come rescue me after I decided to attempt a 20km round trip hike at -30C in the snow, at night, wearing a hoodie, jeans and running shoes".

I swear the higher the population center somone comes from, the lower the possibility is that they have any common sense. He also said there's also something "speshul" about people from Quebec. The ones who got lost, went out of bounds, got hurt or otherwise ate up rescue resources were disproportionately from Quebec for some reason.

And yet my wife and I, both born and raised in the shitty city, get along just fine in the wilderness. I think you just have to make Banff, Lake Louise and these other big name parks less appealing to the tourists who are looking for a fancy trip. If you wouldn't consider camping in a tent in your home country, you're not allowed in the national park. Close the Banff Springs Hotel and all the fancy shops. Shut down the gondola and make people climb Sulphur Mountain if they want to enjoy the view.

Ok, I’ll admit my park is in a fairly urban environment. Some of you have parks bigger than my state. Just the stupidity I see, I can’t imagine what big country parks see. That’s a whole other level of park rangering. I should have moved when I was young and single. I’m now 22 years in with 15 to go.

C__d was one of the worst things to happen to the parks. As things were shut down, lots of people “discovered” their parks. Heck our state was running commercials and encouraging people to get out and explore their state parks.
What they didn’t do was supply us with additional staffing,( they actually pushed back our seasonal hiring dates) move our operating seasons, consider carrying capacity’s, Open seasonal restrooms early( they kept these closed late into the season as well).
End result was record crowds in the state parks with no services. People were just dropping pants and shitting in the middle of trails. Increased litter and parking lots being overwhelmed and people parking in fields and restricted areas. Never mind they were hiking in flip flops and not prepared in any way.

    I’m not frustrated or anything

I totally saw the same thing at my favorite lake, it was INSANE!!!!!! And very sad all at the same time, this specify lake/campground always seem to have a hard time keeping let alone getting a camp host. The first year I went, this host was the best!!!!! Had little solar lights that he put near the bathrooms, which were spotless, he told us about some extra wood at site 27………ten minutes later he’s driving his truck by and giving us that wood Hahahah. Kinda burnt out on that spot now, but I’ve got a new gem in my eye that I’d like to check out!
On our hike out on Monday, we picked up every piece of day hiker trail trash we saw, I was raised to leave a place cleaner than you found it.

I’ve had a 50/50 since last night when I found out about it!!!
A bit of a drive, and one guy said it can get packed during the summer(it’s close to the valley scum……) but maybe a weekday visit might be worth it to beat the crowds. I think it’s cool you can get that close to the lake and camp, but also cabin and camping options too! I sent a link to my mom, hopefully she will bite!

I don't think this is a new problem but there's a forest trail near us where dog owners will bag their dog's business then leave it by the side of the trail as if someone else is going to come along and pick it up. Either pack it out with you or don't bother bagging it. Do you think the cototes carry bags with them?
