Guys... I don't normally do this. I try to keep personal stuff private, and doubly so on the internet, but this is just something I gotta get off my chest.

Getting treated poorly isn't super uncommon for anybody, but it's different when one you love does you dirty. The access you give through love makes you vulnerable and this just hurts.

    Evening goodfellas,
I'm so far behind on this thread, but today I saw some wild stuff that I have to share. My daughter and I have been hunting hard for the past week. Cell service sucks, sleep is minimal, work responsibilities and keeping Mrs Slinger happy fills in any and all left over time. Today we came across this. (Warning pics are a bit deer season gory, but I bet y'all can handle it.)
    We walked up on this
    20211122_103200.jpg
I've heard of this happening but not seen it in person. Plot twist: this situation not only includes two 8 point's in rut fighting over some does, but also a single strand of barbed wire that they tore loose from a nearby fence in the struggle.
    20211122_192102.jpg
So these two brawlers locked antlers, snagged a piece of barbed wire and ended up on about a 100 ft leash ( other end was still strung on the fence line) while they battled it out.

    20211122_192018.jpg
Gonna have to figure out some sort of european mount for this. I'll post up pics when we come up with something.

That's sad for the deer, but cool that you can preserve it. I assume you plan to do the mount with them locked and with the barb wire intact?

It's where you cut the bottom part of the ribcage (?) so you can lay it flat. You get an even cook that way.

    Ok THAT is hilarious!

My wife asked me earlier this afternoon: whatssss thattt?

Me: don’t worry about it, just a hoodie from that dumb truck forum I look at occasionally.

wife: ohhh… you know I think that’s stupid, but I don’t care what it’s about, I just need this softness in my life

Me: ok, I think I can procure you one at some point in the future

I cut out the spine - not sure if that’s the right way, but it’s my way, damnit. My wife and kid love roasted chicken off the grill, so she got me some decent poultry shears a couple years ago to make it. I usually grill a burger or brats for myself and let them have at it.

I believe you also break the breast or wishbone? To make the breast lay flatter as well. Last year I remember doing something to the legs or the wings too, this year my butcher is doing all that. I dropped off a decent bottle of whiskey today to grease the wheels.

Yes, the longer you study the situation the harder it gets to picture the brutality of the situation and its overwhelming.
The plan is to preserve the mounts 'in situ' as much as possible. Including the barb wire. Unfortunately the level of decomp makes it unrealistic to preserve them in anything other than a European type mount. That process may require that they be seperated and re attached after the fact. I will have to get a 'clean' picture to include with the mount. Hopefully they can be left locked, as they were found, throughout the process.

I bet you could find somebody to do a beetle cleaning on it, and they wouldn't have to separate it for that.

Yeah - it’ll still be pretty amazing as a euro mount.

Look into using beetles instead of boiling. It’ll be easier to preserve the exact way you found them

    TIL what “beetle cleaning” is…

The larvae of dermestid beetles feed continuously until all that's left is bone. This process is known as skeletonization and is often used by taxidermists, museum curators, and law enforcement to aid forensic work—the bugs can clear bones of flesh to expose evidence, which can be destroyed by harsh chemicals.
