We were friends with the Texas Hatter's (Manny Gammage) daughter back in the last town we lived in. She lived in her dads old house out on some property. Back in the day, Willie, David Allan Coe, and a bunch of the other "outlaws" would hang out on his property, drink beer and jam. It happened so often that Lone Star used to have their beer truck drop off free cases of beer at his house in the hopes they'd drink them at their concerts. Those would have been the days...

It's a good thing you came during the summer, During the winter this place can be very depressing...

 

I fondly remember being 16, too; but then I learned how to do things correctly.

 

The 70's were.... Something

 

Oh, yeah. The house was really cool, hats everywhere (of course), autographs, they had stuff from the Texas State Capitol that was gifted to him by lawmakers. Guns - tons of guns. Manny had died from Agent Orange complications before we became friends with his daughter but he was a Green Beret in Vietnam, lived a hell of a life.

His hat shop is run by his other daughter and her husband - Manny designed Stevie Ray Vaughns hat and so many others. You go into the shop and it's like a mini-museum.

We have three of their hats - a hybrid or "half-breed" which is half beaver felt/half straw, and two beaver felts (one for my wife). One of my most prized possessions is a gray cowboy hat they gifted me.

 

That is killer!

I wish I could wear those kind of hats.

The really cool thing is they'll design the hat for you so you can wear it. .38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Willie, and there's a shit ton more famous people they've designed hats for. The next time you go out to COTA, you should plan a trip to Lockhart, check out their shop, get some bbq, and then stop by a brewery we did some work for.
