At my other job I heard stories of a guy trying to seal a refrigeration leak with a plastic bag and jb weld…….

 

It does depend on the type of repair being done and the condition of the base metal involved. It’s not a proper and permanent solution, but it’s also not impossible to do. We’ve done plenty of them on industrial pipelines and vessels over the years. We also perform hot taps on all kinds of live systems from low pressure steam to 80psi chilled water to 800psi natural gas.

Keys are to have good sound material that you are trying to fuse to, with enough base thickness to allow for only partial penetration of the weld while still having enough material that is not “altered” (molten) to contain the stress of the pressure inside.

The one that always got me was when they would peen a pinhole like that to seal it up…and discover the material they were opening was ready to just crumble.
