We did the MWR thing with my parents and stayed at their hotel. My dad is a Marine and would get all snarky (in a nice way) after the Navy gate sentry would say "It's a great Navy day!" - it was pretty funny. That would be an awesome place to be stationed. I love Key West. If I had money and a Hurricane escape yacht, I'd live somewhere in the Keys.

 

I think it's written in small print somewhere in the marriage contract that they no longer have to pretend to be complacent or to laugh at our jokes.

 

I’d prefer an escape plane, but yes, the Keys rock!

You really need to and it'd be worth flying into Florida and driving the Keys - each one seems to have a different personality going on. It's a long drive, but a beautiful one. Our favorite spot in Key West was the Hemingway House with all of the polydactyl cats.

 

We had a polydactyl cat. He was cool as hell.

Nope. He wasn't your typical "hardcore" Marine. He joined the Marines to go to Vietnam, did a tour, came home, turned into a hippy for a while, and then started a family. He's the kindest, smartest, and most gentle person I've ever met. That's why it was so funny that he got irritated at the sailor...

 

Each Key is like it’s own mood, setting and country.

Hemingway was gifted with one by a boat captain back in the day. Apparently they were good luck for sailers (unlike bananas). All of the cats at the Hemingway House are direct descendants of the original cat.

I think we had breakfast at a place called “The Six-Toed Cat” or something like that. Best French Toast I’d ever had.

My daughter was freaking out about all of the chickens running around. I told her they were friendly and right on cue, some dude was trying to pet one or something and got his leg pecked. I say “Or something” because he jumped into a car with Ohio license plates. Them’s some weird people in Ohio.

 

Better off not petting anything in Keywest it could be bad for ur health.

 

Or you could make a lifelong friend.

Since we are talking about the Keys - back in the 90's, a friend of mine from Michigan State and I drove to Florida for Spring Break. We tried driving to Key West but our truck was having issues. We made it to Holiday Isle in Islamorada, hung out for a little bit and then drove back to where we were staying in Fort Lauderdale. I did get a drink recipe from there. It has a lot in it but is completely worth seeking out the ingredients. Tastes like a Slurpy. Two of these will have you sitting in the corner, playing with your lips.

Rum Runner (Holiday Isle)

1/2oz Bacardi Black
1/2oz Barcardi 151
7/8oz Blackberry Brandy
7/8oz Banana Liqueur
5/8oz Grenadine
1oz Roses Lime Juice​

Blend with ice and pour into a large wine glass.

Here's one more drink - I created this one when I was bartending. We called it "Toxic Waste" because it has a purple glow to it. It was also the signature drink for a bar (they called it "Plum Crazy"). When we'd go to the beach, we used to dump full bottles of all of the liquor into an igloo cooler filled with ice, dip our glasses in and top it off with 7-up.

Toxic Waste

1/2oz vodka
1/2oz Blue Maui Schnapps
1/2oz Red Maui Schnapps
1/2oz Key Largo Schnapps
7up​

Fill a large glass with ice.

 

Sadly, this is as far as quite a number of people get.

 

Ur name for it sounds fitting.

 

It only gets better the further southwest you go.

Each Key and all bars seem to have their own Rum Runner.


If you visit Kew West and don’t visit, The Rum Bar you’ve wasted a trip.

 

If you can dip your toes in the gulf, you’re in the right spot.

 

I wish we would have made the drive back in the 90's when I could drink (I can drink but it's against my Hematologists recommendations). The wife and I walked down Duval Street and checked out Sloppy Joes. For me, having grown up in Northern Michigan where Hemingway had a family home, it was mostly about seeing his old haunts.

 

I didn’t know such a product existed…..

 

i used it until i found out that they didn't use it on animals. it's not fair that animals can't have a rear like mine after using such a product. no equal rights for those poor bunnies
