If the client chooses to mitigate my losses and share the cost (minus insurance), I will be grateful. I feel that having promised to provide a knife and having received payment, it’s imperative for me to meet my commitment. Please explain why any other course of action is acceptable. Maybe I should reevaluate my point of view.

That's what I meant, as a customer I wouldn't let you eat the whole cost of the second knife.

I love puns and absolutely enjoy mixed metaphors. Sadly, I frequently see that the listener doesn’t get it.
Example; “We will cross that bridge before we burn it”

Yeah, that’s pretty much how I would approach it as well - gotta make it right for the client.

The only real recourse you have is that as the shipper, you can file an insurance claim with USPS to recoup what is/was covered by insurance. If you didn’t opt for additional insurance with the shipment, then that’s likely only $50. If you did, that up to the claimed value you paid for.

I sell a fair amount of pricey stuff on eBay and on several forums, and any time something is more than about $200, I make sure to insure the shipment. I never really recover that cost (I do charge some extra in my “handling” fee, but not fully the cost of the insurance), but it is to protect ME from the carrier doing exactly what happened here. In my case, selling specific items, the only option I have is to give the buyer their money back and then fight with the shipper to get reimbursed for the lost or damaged item.

Yeah that’s a tough situation. You are selling “one of a kind” items so that gets a little difficult to just replace. I would from now on put some kinda of shipping disclosure on your items which states what happens if the package is lost or damaged and require the client to pay the full cost of insurance if they want total protection.

Except that insurance covers the shipper really. They are the only one that can file the claim, because they are the one shipping the good and paying the shipping company. Lots of discussion about the same topic all over ebay hell systems, etc. (yeah, I realize Ray isn’t selling used DVDs and broken tea cups).

Building the cost of insurance into your shipping rate and then bring up front with the buyer that you are doing that would probably be the easiest solution.

Was drinking bourbon and smoking cigars with friends.

My friend always hosts, and since I usually finish a pint while I'm there, I Uber. Watching my driver from the rear view mirror, I've come to the conclusion that there is not nearly enough amphetamine abuse in the ride share industry.
