Estes Park, CO is famous this time of year for elk sightings in town. More so with at least two tourist kids getting hurt by mommy elk. "City Council is now getting concerned." A little bit. A Jaws thing.....

Quite frankly a big brownie or Kodiak could shake off a 12 slug an F you up, more so if you miss....

I've had grizzlies walk onto the small remote gas leases I used to work on. Had a black bear right in the middle of a major construction site last year that I had to shoo. Last month there was a black bear cub up a tree and an annoyed momma bear on the edge of the same job site. Had a few close encounters while hiking and camping.

Bears don't bother me. They're more predictable and reasonable than people in my experience. i do carry a 12ga or 45/70 when in the woods off the clock, but have only ever used it once. Sent a slug into the ground between myself and an ornery young black bear and he fucked off.

I guess a 12 slug in the head would be sufficient! Reload quick just in case. You live in bear country where you're at so you know better than me.

    Interesting...

I wouldn't have thought 2300 ftlbs of energy reasonably placed would be an easy shake off; 44mag is just over half of that at about 1300-1500 ftlbs of energy :notsure:

It's all about placement, bullet grain, powder, eye sight. Ha! I heard so many stories about trying to bag a big brownie and how they can still get you before they die. Sometimes at your feet. But that's the risk you take. Sometimes good and sometimes the adrenaline hits a peak...

Open shot? Brushy? Distance. A lot of things come into play. All of my friends in AK used rifles for bear hunting. Different rifle for where they were hunting. We can shift to bagging a 1700+ pound Yukon moose bull. Same factors apply.

I don't hunt animals and was looking at it from a ballistics standpoint and from a perspective of platforms I'm familiar with... Definitely not claiming to be any kind of expert in dealing w/dangerous game. It's a good discussion though with a whole lot tales and information to sort through when researching on the interwebs

    AcKtcHuaLLy....

    Bear defence lesson inbound...

A head shot is an iffy one. Slugs have actually been known to ricochet off the bear's head if they're not a square on hit. Those skulls are thick and at an angle, plus the head of a charging bear is a rapidly moving target so getting that good hit is very difficult. On a charging bear aim for the chest, center mass, and aim a bit low. You want to break the bear down, not try for a one shot kill. Slamming a round through the boiler room will cause catastrophic damage and the kinetic shot should either fold the bear or turn it. Aim low, because the bear is coming at you the angle is changing. By aiming low you're increasing your odds of a critical hit. If your shot goes high, you may at least luck out and hit the head or get a spinal shot.

Remember, those fuckers are fast. Black bears top out around 30mph, grizzlies around 40mph. Convert that to feet per second and a charging bear is covering roughly 45 - 60 feet per second. If the bear is charging, you're likely within 100 feet. At best, you have 2 seconds to get your gun up, line up your shot and fire. Use some bear awareness and stay alert. Practice with your guns. Bear spray works as well as a gun in most cases.

This is all without factoring in the bear's adrenaline dump and slow heart rate. So yeah, make it count or start planning your obituary.

TLDR: Head shot hard, center mass good, bear fast, 2 seconds real short time before real bad day start.

Usually pretty good. I haven't had a chance to get out since ice off though. I'm hoping to make a trip in a couple weeks so I'll find out then.

    The Dirty T ( ^_^)_且

That would be my only hope. I usually carry my 380 when camping as it's convenient, light, and fits in my short's pocket. It's fine for what I would most likely run into like people or a mountain lion, but if a bear showed up, my only hope would be that a shot into the ground scares it off. Otherwise, I guess just empty the other 9 rounds into it and hope it gives it enough discomfort to go away.

A well placed .22 round can remove the bear problem.

Hit your girlfriend in the knee, and the bear will be so preoccupied, he won't even notice you after that. You can practically just walk away.

I'm not the greatest human on this earth as most of you know, but I, personally, think I've got some kids that are better than well over half the kids out there. I've worked in service industry before long enough to see plenty of shitty kids, typically raised by even shittier parents
