Just got back from my first Boy Scout jamboree with my youngest.

honest question, since I was never a scout, but were scouts always a place for D&D, Larping, weirdos ?……this extends to most of the dads there as well. I was kind of socially shunned after saying I was into guns and hunting.

that being said the kid (who I admit is awkward and nothing like his sports loving brother) had a great time on his first trip camping

The scouts changed when they stopped being Boy Scouts.

I was a Cub Scout until my mother found out she'd need to put effort into it

If you know of other dads/kids that share the same sense of adventure as you (guns, hunting, survival skills) vs. the other dads/kids (D&D, Ken dolls, cheesy poofs), you can start a troop. Scouting BSA - or whatever their name is now - troops are either boys or girls, afaik, and not both. They've had bad press and suffer the same problems as the Catholic church as far as image due to humanity problems, so ymmv troop to troop. There's an alternative growing in popularity: Trail Life USA | Adventure, Character, Leadership

Our den dads are pretty good, same frame of mind, but this was a pack event, and my usual dad I bs with did not attend, so I was stuck lone wolfing it. It’s not a bad thing, as it’s my usual go to anyway.

We have one more year, then switch to a different troop if we are going to continue on to Boy Scouts.

I don't know about the dads but the other kids in my troop were into biking, playing guitar (rock and metal) and violent video games (Doom, Unreal Tournament, GTA).

Eagle Scout here. It was a mix for us - but definitely none of the sports kids/jocks were in scouts. So that left the nerds, dweebs, dorks, and introverts (me included). We had an awesome scout master that was a veteran woodsman and we spent a lot of time in the outdoors learning bushcraft, survival, and general . But a lot of us were also into D&D, dog sledding, stealing someone’s dads Penthouse to stash into our sleeping bag and ogle over by 6V lantern, sneaking out of camp in the middle of the night to sneak smokes down by the lake shore, taking the Webelos scouts out snipe hunting in the dark until they would cry, telling ghost stories, whatever.

My sons not into sports, which is why I got him into scouts to encourage him to be outdoors, but it seemed like I was surrounded by a bunch of near spectrum, afraid of the woods, what am I doing here types

I had a somewhat similar experience as Casey, I had a lot of fun and still hang out with some of the guys from the troop. Definitely a lot of fun memories. That being said, I don’t know if I’d put MY kids in scouts nowadays. We basically do a lot of the shit we did in scouts on a regular basis, and I don’t want a bunch of REI dads asking me how to light their stove

I’m by default the assistant den leader. Nothing is getting taught unless I approve of it.

I’ll be able to avoid the other dads, as their kids are Weblos and will be moving on. We’ll be top dog in the pack next year. I think we’ll avoid inviting the lower den on the trip next year, which will leave us with the 4 kids in our den
