Was there certain years the Subaru had the head gasket issues? Iirc it usually occurred around 50/60k miles?

Not sure. I have had 2 as company vehicles with over 75k miles on them without issue. I have another now with 30k on it so far without issue.

Speaking of intelligence or lack thereof...

I took this pic yesterday at the lake. The lake is aerated, meaning a big chunk doesn't freeze. This also causes a big chunk that does freeze to have thin, poorly formed, unstable ice.

Look at these friggen geniuses. Not only are they inside the danger zone signs, they're within feet of the open water. They might be on an inch or two of iffy ice at best. Oh, and they have a firepit going too.

This is how people die and rescuers are put at risk. Retards.

I kept an eye on them through my binos. They didn't catch a thing. The one person who did was out my way, on 10" of safe ice.

I was actually more curious to see if they went for an unplanned swim than to watch their success.

    yes and no.
The horizontal boxer engine as a whole is a design that is prone to more HG issues because there will always be fluid sitting/pooled against the gasket. There are reports of specific years of Subaru's having "notorious head gasket issues" and claims that after a specific year (of which I've seen at least ten different years stated) that they "changed the design" and it's not an issue.

Yes, they are known to be more common to develop a leak in the HG at around 100k miles (or more). It starts as a mild oil seep, and can stay like that for 50-100k more miles, or it can deteriorate more quickly and become a serious problem. To fix it requires pulling the engine, so depending on the mechanic it can be a big expense. We had a 2008 Impreza (manual hatchback) that my older daughter drove for about 2 years. It had a mild seep (about 180k miles on it when we bought it) but never got worse in ~30k miles. The 2012 sedan my younger daughter drove (until it was totaled on New Years 2023 by a drunk driver) was perfect at ~160k miles with no issues or signs at all. The 2008 Forester my older daughter has now had a seep that was heading toward being worse (but still not too bad) so we had the HG replaced at 226k miles (it is now at about 270k). The 2017 Forester that just got totaled had about 110k miles on it and the engine still looked perfect. But we owned that car since brand new and have been very particular about the maintenance on it as well.

One thing to watch on the Subarus is the timing belts (for years/engines that have them). Not any different than the Toyotas with a timing belt - it's an interference engine and you don't want that thing breaking. If you get a used one and it's over 90-100k miles and you can't find a record of it being changed, then change it.

All of ours have been NA. Boosted may have a little higher chance of it, but I think more often the boosted ones just have a higher chance of being driven by dipshits that thought they were drift kings and didn't take care of them properly. If you're looking at a WRX or any hatchback, get it looked over well by a trusted mechanic unless you personally know who owned the car from when it was new.

I've been checking in but haven't posted for about a week. Had a total shit show of crap dropped on x-mas eve that I have been processing, but I'm the type that keeps my business to myself and doesn't talk about it. But I wanted the Cru to know I have not abandoned them and have been keeping up, I just haven't felt like making my normal TWSS jokes and crap like that.

Now, with that said, I'm back, don't give a flying fuck (and obviously have had plenty of liquid courage), so I shall now participate like I usually do.

Unrelated to anything, my wife who as a child/teen/young adult was brainwashed by the Mormon church (yes, fully normal now- blame me :D) loves watching crazy Mormon podcasts and tell all videos on YouTube. Anyways, she is in the other room watching one where they are discussing the subject of whether or not god banged Mary as taught by Brigham Young.

My first thought was that if god created everything and can do whatever he wants with whomever he wants and he chose to bang Mary, damn, Mary must have been hot AF.

Boosted models actually had a metal gasket and were less prone to natural failure, but more prone to flat brim vape-tard induced failure.

With any turbo change the oil and filters more/regular. Don’t just turn the motor off after running it hard let it idle and “cool down” for 3-5 min before turning it off it will last longer.

Older ones required that, but I know in the 2014+ WRX engines (not the STI) they added cooling that ran after it was shut down.
