i've done the math on solar as well as our financial advisor (for me and himself), and right now in our area, the best quotes and tax rebates don't make it beneficial or have a return (or pay for itself) until about year 20-25, which is when most of the warranties run out, if not before then.
the ones that were going on during the 80% tax rebate total (50/30 between federal and state), the panels are of a lower quality and don't produce as much. my neighbor right next door got them then and he still has a fairly high bill....although i know there are different factors that are to be considered like temps kept in the house, insulation, usage in house during times of day, etc.....but it doesn't seem to be really helping his as much as he'd like it to.
i really want to get the solar panels, but the numbers aren't adding up enough for me to do it where i live. hoping with some of the new energy talk going around, that there will be some good incentives to come back. i've even had a couple solar companies come out, and they said unless you get the new new panels at about 60-70% rebate minimum, he wouldn't buy them either. so 2 different people that SELL THE PANELS and make a commission off of them, have told me they wouldn't do it either.

You beat me this month. Mine was under $400. Although I did just spend big bucks for a new AC that's fairly efficient and I keep the house at 76.

A huge problem for solar (if you care about this stuff), is the disposal of the solar panels at the end of their lifecycle. 30-40 years for most of them. Loaded with hazardous materials and not readily accepted by most landfills. It’s a growing problem for the Republic of Kalifornia, where they really pushed solar power for residential in the ’80’s+.

i wasn't going to go that far into it, but you're absolutely right. and thats exactly what i've heard as well. the time when it was pushed so hard it had a huge response and lots did it. then when time came to dispose, they're all standing around like :notsure:
but yea...that's another reason i wasn't too keen on getting them knowing that was going to be an issue and a problem for future Andy

Besides the huge cost, I'm not a fan of putting extra holes in my roof to bolt the panels down.
Plus I have a flat roof and the sun here is brutal on roofs. I usually re-coat my roof every 5 or so years which isn't exactly cheap even without the extra cost of removing and reinstalling the panels to do the coating.

i questioned that too, and they (typically) have a warranty on the roof installation. but considering y'alls "nextdoor-neighbor-to-the-sun" environment and the maintenance y'all have to do on it, i don't particularly see it working out well in your case.

I don't miss those damn electrical bills... Working graves most of my life meant sleeping during the day; and for some reason I don't sleep well unless it's mid 60s or cooler in the room (ok high 60s in the summer is fine). So June, July, Aug and Sept those units were cranking throughout day and never got a break. I imagine folks that set their t-stats at 78-82 during the day while I work saved a bit of $$ this way... Anyhow, we had 2 units on the home and 1 unit on the dog kennel and during those high summer months it was easily $550-$650/month; and I believe the highest I ever saw was in the low $800s

We looked into solar, and found it to be the same; we'd be long gone before we'd be able to recoup the investment...

Funny story: When we came out to the coast and started house shopping, I couldn't believe how many homes were built without AC; it's just not needed here (except a few days a year and even that is really not 'needed' or extreme). Ultimately, we ended up buying a home w/o it... somehow I've survived :D

NV had some issues w/regulations of them as well. Power companies were obviously losing some $$ from customers and lobbied to have legislation on solar power re-vamped as solar companies started pushing them. I don't remember all the nuances to it, but it ended up being that if you were a power company customer and had service through them after solar install the power you farmed was basically deposited to them somehow and your account was 'credited' for the deposit; and since you'd get more than you needed during the summer months, those credits would carry over to the winter and be applied to your bills... Then if you used more than you farmed, you'd pay the power company for the excess :notsure:

I have a hard time trusting that they weren't netting a 'fee' and enjoying a slice of your pie... I have a tenancy to not trust and start doing research when large companies, the state and the feds start trying to sell me too hard on why I should or shouldn't be doing something :spy:

Yeah, that's what I said. The city buys their energy wholesale from the Lower Colorado River Authority. They just happened to raise the price of energy by 30% last month. My neighbors bill was $1400.

I'm a little worried about next months bill. The rate fluctuates every month - hopefully it dropped back down.

Welcome to the green new world. Just wait until the old stuff is shut down and the green stuff stops being subsidized. Electric bills will be really nuts then.

    Who works for FedEx here?!

I ordered an expensive freaking 27" display for my new computer. The military exchange sent it directly from their distributor on August 8th. As far as I can tell, on August 9th somebody at FedEx opened it, pulled out my invoice, printed a "Relabel", put it in a much smaller box with a pair of Women's Reeboks, slapped the new label on it and had it delivered to me today.

Their delivery notification even says it weighed 24lbs. The package they delivered weighed less than 2lb.

    :annoyed:

Instead of using 'a tank of Tundra gas' as a financial decision reference, you FL, TX and AZ dudes should use the 'it's just a month of electricity' gauge for financial decisions and to win arguments w/the wife :D

I’ve learned a little bit since I got on our local electric company board and I still have a lot to learn, but here’s a few things to consider.
We buy electricity pretty cheap from BPA. Meter customers pay more because of the cost of building and maintaining the distribution system and the salaries of workers and overhead + overburden.
If people with solar systems are selling it back to an electric company at the same price they paid, it’s not fair to the rest of the customers because they are not paying to support the infrastructure and maintenance.

Just got our City Manager Report for this month and he tells us the monthly cost per KW Hour. Last month (the $806 bill) was $0.1621 per KW Hour. This month it's dropped down 29% to $0.1155 per KW Hour. Hopefully that'll drop our bill down a little.
