Good idea, although since I suggested it, I should be the one getting something.

Lucky for @MARanger I'm a cheap date. Some beer would be enough.

Totally get that, I work for the State of AZ. Although since 2012 AZ Gubment jobs are "at will" which means that if you were hired after 2012 they can fire your ass for no reason.

We are getting ready to move my Special Needs Bro-in-law and he can't keep his cat. It's not such a bad thing because the cat is an asshole and has peed all over his current house. I had an appointment to pick the cat up and take him to the shelter at this morning at 10am. Cats, like people, seem to either love me or hate me and I don't give a shit either way. He hates me.

So I was heading to Mrs. Banditos workplace to get the 4Runner because I knew the cat would be screaming for the 20 minute drive and I didn't want to be on the news because somebody videoed me pulling the cat out of the bed of my truck. I figured I'd put him in the very back and crank the music. Right before I left to get the 4Runner, my brother-in-law calls me and says he can't get the cat out from under the bed and into his carrier. I told him I can't get him because he absolutely hates me and left to get the 4Runner.

I get the 4Runner, pull up to my brother-in-laws house and when I get out of the car I can hear "Owwwwwwww! Stop it!!! Owwwwwww!!! STOP IT!!!!!!!" I forgot my key and rang the doorbell. My brother-in-law comes to the door and has the cat in some kind of headlock. His shirt is all torn up. The cat is screaming and hissing. My brother-in-law, who doesn't have a mean bone in his body, is looking angry and says "So he won't stop screaming and get in his crate."

We walk over to the crate and my brother-in-law is trying to put him in though the top. The damn cat is looking at me screaming and hissing. I couldn't get a grip on him because of the way my brother-in-law was holding him and the cat is doing prison pushups on the edge of the crate and clawing the shit out of him. I told him to let him go and got Mrs. Bandito to come from work to help. Blood everywhere.

She was able to do some kind of cat whisperer thing and got him into the crate. I patched up my brother-in-law who is crying because he just got his ass kicked by this stupid freaking cat. I got the cat to the car and drove 20 miles to the shelter. Bastard screamed the whole way there. I kept looking in the rear view mirror in case the shit broke free from his crate. The plan was to slam the brakes, aim for a ditch, and do a combat roll out of the moving vehicle.

I get him there and he's screaming the whole long walk to the intake area. Everybody's looking. The crate is moving around like a caught a Tasmanian Devil. A lady was walking a dog and the dog actually saw the crate and went the other way. They were going to pull him out of the crate and I told them they could keep it. I wanted to get out of there before they realized I dropped off a demon and added an exorcism surcharge.

Ended up picking up my brother-in-law when I got back and bringing him to a Nurse Practitioner we know. She doubled checked his wounds for free (everybody loves him) and wrote a prescription for an antibiotic. He also got a tetanus shot. Freaking cat.

So, $12/hour (ish) raise isn’t anything to balk at. But how does it compare to your “real” income based on the OT etc. that you get now…or would you still get that. Or is the 25k raise on top of your current all-in pay? What does it represent as a % as over your current pay - if it’s 20%+ increase that’s big, but if it’s a 5% raise that’s barely holding inflation.

sounds like you’ve got good things to say about the group you’d be overseeing and the stress and responsibility would be manageable. So you’ve got to consider if the added commute (which is really “working for free”) and the fact it’s a desk job are ok for you. No one else can weigh out that comparison.

    Good luck!

We've had some crazy cats, but nothing like this guy. I feel horrible because he snookered us when we adopted him. He was all sweet until we got him home and then he turned into a dick.

I have a good friend and coworker. His daughter was a Valedictorian at U of Colorado, Boulder. Got hired by the Feds. US Marshal Service. Goes after Fed parole violators. Going on 6+ years now. Just got promoted and recently received the Western Region Achievement award. Really big actually. Really big. Promoted over folks with more time in service but she kicked butt. More money and.....she loves her job. You kick butt and stand out things happen. You get noticed. She'll have a lot more responsibility and is going for it. Married with a little girl. Husband has a good job and is all for it. Not for me to tell you what to do, but clearly your superiors think you are up to the task. BTW......My friend's daughter had never handled a firearm until she became a US Marshal. She's is a real badass now according to her dad.....ha!

Take the job, frame the guy for murder, fire him, coast till retirement?

We had the same issue with a cat. Super nice, everything was all good for about a year and then a switch flipped. He decided he hated everyone except The Woman and even she had to deal with bullshit half the time. We got another cat in the hopes the first one would make friends and settle down. He kinda did, but was still an asshole. Finally it came to a head one day about a week later and the dickhead cat and I had a huge fight while The Woman was out of town. Yowling, hissing, snarling, biting...and that was just me. The cat got some rude remarks and scratches of his own in as well as shit in his kennel out of spite. The whole catastrophe. The poor second cat was cowering in a corner wondering what the hell kind of home had adopted him.

I finally got the dickhead cat into his kennel and told The Woman that she had 24 hours from the time she got home to find the cat a new place to live or there'd be a drive in the country involving me, the cat, and a .22. She had a home for him in 12 hours.

We kept the second cat. He's a cool dude and a real character.

I found the biggest butterfly I've ever seen today. I don't know if the cold weather got him last night or what was killing him but he couldn't really fly. I ended up setting him on some flowers. Figured if it was dying, it'd be better on the flowers than on the ground where the ants would get it.

Thank you for posting that - I was looking at the pic again and was thinking maybe it was a moth. Hopefully it laid some eggs in my yard. I had some cardboard boxes on the porch and she was in there.

Maybe she went in there to die because she really wasn't flying well at all. Now I feel bad for moving her but I needed to recycle the box...

That’s a moth. You can tell by the antennae - the feathered looking antennas are a tell tale sign it’s a moth. Still cool as hell - maybe more so

How many more years do you plan to remain in this career field? If you are within your final 3-5 years, it usually makes sense to take the promotion and raise, especially if it will have a long-term 'significant' benefit such as a pension amount. However, if you have more than 5 years left, continue doing what you love doing (being in the field, independence, etc.). Opportunities seem and feel like they are fleeting and therefore urgent to take advantage of. However (in my humble opinion) if you have to ask, then you're probably not really ready to leave behind what you enjoy doing.

It's easy to think that an extra $25k/yr would have a huge positive impact in your life. However, unless you're doubling your income, your actual 'quality of life' probably won't improve that much. Maybe you'll be able to afford a pricier vehicle, extras for the home, etc. But, in the end, being happy at work matters more than you'd think.

In my personal experience, I chose to not move from being "operational" to "management". I always pushed myself to grow, but there are other ways to do that and not give up being in the field. I have never regretted any 'loss' of income for making the decision not to promote.

A couple of my very close friends made the decision to take the other path, with a desire to always return to doing what they loved the most. However, that day never came for either of them. One is still pushing higher up the chain (because that's the only way to go), and the other retired and was no longer able to transition back into doing what he loved because his 'relevancy' within the industry had expired.

    Good luck with your decision...

I remember as a kid visiting Door County, WI, we went to the ice cream shop in Elliot Bay and finding a huge Luna moth outside on a bush. It was really cool.

I grew up in a small town. We had a regional high school that 7 towns went to. I graduated a class of 63. My girlfriend lived an hours car ride from me. Fun was what you made it. Our fun involved a lot of alcohol

I can relate. I went to school in a small town in Northern Michigan. You started Kindergarten in one end and then worked your way up the halls and graduated in the other end. My class was one of the larger ones - I believe we graduated around 36 people.

Speaking of cats, this little turd is weird. He rolled into this position while getting scratches then kinda just stayed there.
