Bummer about that truck. But things happen for a reason im sure something closer will pop up for you.

Look up ring and pinion to see what they look like. They sit in the bulbous part of the axles. They have a ratio number, such as 3.55:1 or 4.30:1 on the 5.7 tundras. The higher number (called “lower”) gears turn more times per twist of the axle, thus increasing leverage over the axle. This gives the vehicle easier ability to turn taller/heavier tires. Taller tires will reduce your engine RPMs for a given speed vs stock tires. So adding driveline turns through lower gears will get those engine RPMS back up to where you want them.

yes they help in towing a ton, but they also help the truck drive like stock with taller tires every day.
    Hope that helps!

@Hbjeff @Luv2_4x4 basically the numerically higher the axle ration the easier it will spin bigger tires or pull a load. If you gear it down (numerically higher) further, it will easier spin both bigger tires and the load.

With stock tires yes, but with upsized tires lower gears just return you to your stock final drive ratio

@hb Jeff yes sorry... I guess I meant that gearing it down more than you need to will help when you have bigger tires. Returning to stock ratio wouldn’t be too bad either for towing as long as the tires aren’t that much bigger.
