Why do you prefer TT to 5ver? Bed space?

Are you telling me you go under payload but over GAWR on a common occurrence?

Curious what you're doing that happens to you on a frequent basis.

Hey now, I just pulled it from the health associations that survey that data! I was surprised too. I had to triple-check it to make sure cause my girlfriend + both of our dogs don't even equal that lol. But I guess I'm not surprised cause every time I walk through my local Wal-Mart it's definitely up there.

    This guy?

Watching his videos, towing up grades at 35-40 mph is not getting it done.

Oh it is. Math doesn't lie and the Raptor towing the same trailer video makes me even laugh harder.

There was a Toyota Tundra TV commercial on last night that showed a 2022 Tundra towing a 5th wheel in the snow. Only have seen it once.

Yup, and it also has fine print abont not exceeding payload or towing limits. Marketing is just lying as legally as possible.

upload_2022-4-12_20-51-53.jpgI appreciated all comments to my post. I didn't know I'd be opening a can of worms but here is what I've found so far. A Cougar fifth wheel model 29MBS(Specs below). In a 5.5 size bed will work very well with a pullrite super Glide 3100 hitch it should be able to handle pretty fair considering the Platinum i-force can two a combine gross weight of 17250lbs.

You need to look at the payload, not the tow capacity. That hitch weight listed is likely lower than reality, because that's a base camper with no options and no propane, batteries, fluids, etc. Even if it's dead on for the pin weight, that comes directly out of the payload rating of the truck, and so does the hitch and any options added to the truck plus the passengers. If your truck has a payload of 2000 pounds (as a platinum it won't have anywhere near that) that would leave you with less than 400 pounds for passengers, hitch, camping gear, floor mats, etc.

You will run out of payload before you ever get to the tow rating or the GCVWR. If you want a 5th wheel that size you need a bigger truck to stay in limits. If you don't care about the limits, then asking on here wasn't necessary.

Read through my post on the first page of this thread. The 5th wheel you're asking about has 309 more hitch weight than the one I used as an example.

Plus, you have at best a payload rating of 1,720, so just dry weight (not including putting anything at all into your camper or even including options or packages you might get with that camper) leaves you an available payload of 90 pounds. So unless it's just you in the truck and you have absolutely nothing in the truck with you, not even a Big Gulp, you can't weigh a pound over 90 pounds in order to not exceed your payload capacity. Every pound you're over payload, you're a danger to yourself, everyone on the road, and your truck itself.

    My original answer: NO

    This is not the way.

You'll be way over payload (Not sure anyone really cares on here, or they care too much)
Your camper will be way too close to the cab of the truck due to the 5th wheel hitch location on the 5.5' Tundra. The hitch is placed over the rear axle of the truck. See the difference in distance between the Tundra and a 2500 pickup. Excuse the crude sketching. The 6.5' Tundra bed would help with cab clearance. Some cab configurations and trims may allow for the numbers to look better. Use the right tool for the job.

I tow a 5thwheel with a tundra, 8.3k with 1400 hitch. A superglide hitch or a sidewinder-reese revolution set up would work great on a shortbed. If you have any leads on a frame mount kit for the 22' please let me know. The fiver you posted is a bit big for the truck imho, maybe look at some 28' units and watch that hitch weight.

Just be careful with the short bed and length of the 5th wheel. You definitely don't want to get pushed around when going over bumps and pot holes, let alone the wind. Whatever you decide on I would wait until a windy day and then go to the dealership to test it out. The last thing you want is to buy something and then after 1 season regret your decision. These things cost too much to make a mistake

No pissing match here. Just trying to convey that it is possible and the tundra is an awesome tow vehicle. Would I full time it, no. Sorry but IDGAF if I am 200 pounds over payload but within all other weights. Payload police got my panties in a bunch! 20220413_143948.jpg

There's a big difference between being 200lbs over and 1,000+lbs over like this guy wants to do.

I'm not one advocating for towing policing, especially since I plan on using a 3rd gen Tundra for a 5th wheel as well, but I at least understand its limitations and the math behind it.

You're probably at best 3% over GVWR if what you're saying is accurate, and looking at your profile you made some modifications to help accommodate for it as well. But this guy wants a 5th wheel whose dry/base hitch weight is higher than his payload without accomodating passengers or anything else in the truck. He's going to be easily 1,000lbs+/15%+ over which is a huge nono and I will put my foot down on that and argue against it.

Do agree, like my post a few up. He should look for a smaller unit and a floor plan than benefits pin weight. Here is GCW from a week or 2 ago, my 2wd dc has a GCW of 16,200 (?). Yes he would be far over, my stance is that it can be done and done right.20220413_152046~2.jpg

There's a little over payload (I'm in that group) and there's a lot over payload. I'd bet OPs payload is probably 1,400 pounds on the door sticker. And I'm thinking if someone doesn't want to hear from the payload police they probably shouldn't start a thread asking for opinions.

Obviously, I'm not @Nm6300'asl, but I imagine his answer is similar to mine and everyone else in the same boat, but because Toyota doesn't make a 3/4 or a 1ton.

Like above, toyota doesnt make one. In addition I also use my truck for work and a 3/4-1 ton would be way too expensive with my yearly mileage of about 50k a year.

My 5er is a "half ton towable", within all limits except door sticker (over 2-300 lbs). We recently found out there is the something amiss with those tho.

So I guess the answer to you question is, it fits, it tows well, and I am not gonna worry about 2-300 lbs. Which is nothing when the total is almost 15k.

Those currently towing 5th wheels seem to all have DC with 6.5’ beds. OP has 5.5’ bed configuration. Gonna be a problem.
