Looks cool. For moving one around in a pinch, short distances. 2 hours on the interstate? Cross country trip? I’m out. Sway could be gnarly with that setup.

Nope. They are built for it. I researched the Trailer Toad and it's a solid option to solve the Tundra payload problem if you've got a few grand to spare in your budget.

Something else to maintain. If you have to have a 5th wheel just buy a 3/4 ton and do it right.

It's an axle to grease. Hardly a reason to write it off. Also, I wouldn't personally use it for a 5th wheel. Just a way to tow a trailer that was in limits but ate payload. Like a small toy hauler or something. An extra axle to maintain is a small price to keep a Toyota truck vs going domestic.

If you are dead set on a 5th wheel and want to keep your Toyota, look into Escape Trailers. It's one of the only 5th wheels I'd consider for a half ton truck.

So upon further inspection the safety hitch appears to be a well built solution. It adds another axle with another set of brakes (great for heavy towing). It uses a 3 point hitch to the towing vehicles frame for great control. All plusses.
    Some negatives?
    Its $10k+
I only see it hooked up to heavy duty trucks on their website.
    Their website. It sucks.
No info on capacity that I could find.
Pending Canadian approval due to different rules in different provinces.
Must be careful with travel trailer length as this device adds a significant amount of length to overall tow rig setup, 65ft. Seems to be the maximum allowable.
It’s a bandaid for a problem. Neat solution, non-conventional, but a bandaid. The real solution is likely a better matched tow vehicle.

Look at the trailer toad. They show it. Pull a pin and it locks for backing so it's just like having a longer truck. These things are designed and thought out. They're not half-assed backyard redneck solutions.

Last time I checked Tundras were made in San Antonio. About as domestic as you can get. You forgot about tires.

I talked to a guy that towed a 5th wheel with his tundra at a campsite. I remember him telling me it was a 26 to 28 footer. He said he had no problem. But, that’s not a big 5th wheel camper. If your determined to get a big 5th wheel. You could have someone with a truck that could handle it take it to the campground to let there for the season.

I’ve got a GD 315RLTS bumper tow TT and get real close to the GCWR with my F-250 fully loaded. I’m well under payload and GVWR on the truck and trailer. No way in hell I’d tow a 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton but that’s me.
As @ColoradoTJ says throw caution to wind, load it up and run hell bent for election! Take pictures of the aftermath for posterity sake.

It is a cool design but there's no way that is backing into the spots I camp with trees on either side. Way too long. You take a 30 ft trailer and add another 6 ft to the length of your truck and it's gonna be a bitch.

Like I said, I wouldn't be doing it with a 30 foot trailer. When I researched stuff like that it was when I was looking at something like this 18' toy hauler. Just to keep payload in check. Any trailer over 24' is just bigger than I want to mess with. Hauled 53 footers long enough that I appreciate a small trailer.

If I didn't have a SxS I would have one of the small egg style campers. They last, are light, and have all the basics.

Is your trailer a 5th wheel or a bumper pull? I only ask because if you can get a trailer toad for half what that one costs. It's not an auto driver system and won't do a 5th wheel, I don't think, but it's just under 5k and that included delivery.

Bumper pull. I’d get a MicroMinnie 5th wheel if I could find one near by.

I'm so confused right now. Name implies Massachusetts, but Utah plates on an F150 in a post on a Tundra forum. :goingcrazy::rofl:

If things change for me and I ever go to a camper I'll be shopping 20 feet or less and light weight. That one you have on your truck is about as big as I think I'd ever want, and it's what 22 feet? 24?

21’ box, 24’ total. Ive got two kids and this is just about as small as you can get and still have bunks.

but you are right, there have been times when I am boondocking and on tight forest roads where it would be nice if it were smaller.

The Winnebago MicroMinnies are 7’ wide and they had a 5th wheel version that was awesome. They started building them right as covid started I think and then I think they canned them after only building a handful.
