So, I saw on TundraDude34's youtube channel that Tow/Haul mode is really fun. It changes the shift points and fuel mapping to give you a whole new driving experience.

Well, it is absolutely awesome and I'm hooked. I never drive in regular mode anymore, it just seems so sluggish.

My question is this: Can the truck be set up so that Tow/Haul is default when starting the engine, and that you have to press the button to disengage it? Seems possible, but I just don't know. I want mine set up that way if it can be done.

I haven't read of anyone being successful at doing this, they've probably given up after realizing how easy it is to simply just push the button.

Sure, that's easy but I usually don't realize it until I'm underway and sluggishly entering the road from my driveway. I want it on by default.

The only things that I can think of are to figure out how to automatically send a signal to the transmission ECU upon start up, or to form the habit in yourself to push the button after turning the key (effectively automatically sending a signal from you brain to your finger to push the button). :)

Will wiring into something off the ignition not work?

*By off the ignition I mean something hot when key is on.

Pushing the button just sends a one time signal to the ECU every time it is pressed, it's not a continuous voltage. That's why the trucks have indication lights to show what's active/inactive. Notice that the buttons don't stay depressed when on and retract when off. I think that if you were to try connecting a steady voltage, you may burn something out in the ECU.

I'd just press the button instead of taking the chance wiring and screwing your tranny or ecu up

Messing with the electrical system is out of the question.

I'm thinking something more along the lines of a "hack" that Toyota already programmed in. Sort of like when you reset the "Trip A" to zero then hold it down when starting the truck clears the maintenance light.

Sounds to me like you need a tuner.

"Hack" may not be the term to describe resetting the maintenance light as I think that's in the Owner's Manual, but I get your meaning. I'll bet that the Toyota engineers just push the button though. LOL

I'm with @16tunterd on this just buy a a hypertech/bullydog and a cheap diagnostic reader/clearer and enjoy instead of worrying about tow haul

I think I just pissed my pants reading some of the quotes. Funny shit right there ! I'm with most the guys on here. Probably not the best idea to mess with the ECU. I think you need a Ferrari Maddog to get your haul ass mode. I think our trucks do pretty good with that 5.7. (although a little more power never hurt anyone). I'm thinking SC Maddog !
