I got OEM f&r, gonna pair them with TC UCA and revalve/tune all 4 shocks for more travel/high speed offroading but save up for those 3.0's front and rear, by the time king releases them I don't have to use the credit card , them shits look like they make long travel not even worth forking the money over.

    None, yet....
Or... save up the coupon cash, use the credit card anyway for the points and pay it off immediately. Might as well get something for spending money you were gonna spend anyway.

Clean set up. But pneumatic bump stops are for those that don't know how to properly set up their suspension or just over drive what they have.

Noooo... you want them because they look cool. Take it from a guy who had them on his daily driver for 11 years. They aren't needed. Just a rubber bump will do.

    I’ve always thought this.

It seems to me that an external hydro bump is just masking a shock problem. Why do so many people run them? If all they do is add compression damping for one portion of the stroke, why can’t that be accomplished inside the shock?

External bumps were very high on our priority list to stop us bottoming out in the bigger hits, but I also thought I could just solve it with better compression tuning in the bypass.

Why do so many race trucks run them instead of just tuning their shocks?

For race cars/trucks with lots of travel and shock fade during a race, they can be helpful. For normal everyday driving and slow trail driving they're not necessary. A rubber bump will do the job.

This is the Terrible Herbst Truggy. [IMG]

The most dominate off road racing vehicle ever built. It won every race at least once in it's career before retirement a few years ago. Right above the rear wheel is a rubber bump stop. No need for pneumatic. They did enough testing and tuning to get it figured out.

Some Trophy Trucks run them to make up for the weight change while racing. Carrying 90-110 gallons of fuel and burning it off will change the suspension set up and handling. There's also a few teams that run them because they want to show their sponsors products. And also for a bit of insurance for those "oh shit we should have prerun this section more" moments.

On our teams Class 1 cars, we don't run them. On our old 10 car, we didn't run them. On our new 1 car that's being built, I'm pretty sure we aren't running them.

Bottom line, unless you're doing some serious prerunning or racing, they aren't necessary. Save your money.

There are many ohh shit moments on the trail since we rarely pre run any of them. And a rain can change a wash overnight. Plus we don't spend the amount of time a race truck spends tuning. Nor do most of us have the vast experience or knowledge. Lol It's mostly a guess based on recommendations.

Thanks for the explanation - that makes a lot of sense. Our particular style of driving is caught someplace between everyday driving and wannabe race truck. Most of our team is fully loaded with expedition gear but still wants to blast trails at stupid speeds. Fullspeed whoops and jumps are a regular part of our trips, and we almost never run the same section twice, so those ‘oh shit’ moments are pretty constant. I suppose we could categorize ourselves as prerunners that don’t take notes.

Craig, I wonder if we should setup a trip where we incorporate a day or two with the Shock Therapy guys and dedicate some time to dialing in our shocks. I know your weight swings between daily and overland setup are kinda high, but you’re also working to minimize that. Once we get everyone’s new rear suspensions complete I think we should look into it.

Its kind of funny watching someone compare a purpose built race truck with 3' of travel to an OEM truck with 12" of travel or less. They aren't limited on travel, nor worried about having a compliant street ride, they have more uptravel than the OEM truck has total travel. They are running a much bigger motion ratio on the shock and can have a much larger bumpzone on the bypass.

At the end of the day, both a rubber bump and hydro bump accomplish the same thing. Can a truck be tuned fast without, definitely. Will having a hydro bump cause any negative or adverse effects, not at all. On a truck with limited uptravel, they can be a huge benefit.
