Wholesale values have been dropping over a percent a week lately. That's a marked downturn and reversal. It's not overall a large percentage yet, but if this trajectory continues it will be very prominent.
Not to mention, higher ticket vehicles (that aren't special editions) have experienced more of a drop. HD pickups, higher end SUVs. Small commuter cars with good fuel mileage are resisting the downturn more effectively because of the ridiculously high fuel prices.
Dealers are keeping slightly used tundras above msrp for essentially one buyer - the one who just got in an accident, needs a vehicle today, and got way more from insurance than they expected. This will continue until new tundras start sitting on lots

Or…hear me out on this one…maybe I knew that and it was another tactic to get them to stop bothering me.

It’s not my first rodeo dealing with car dealers. I know they hate cash buyers. That’s why I never tell them I’m paying cash until after the purchase price and trade in value is agreed upon.

Where you live impacts this greatly. If I exclude commercial vehicles, it's almost 1:1 Tundra's to F-150's in my neck of the woods. I travel to DFW and west Texas quite a bit for work and I'm always shocked at how few Tundra's I see out there.

I did this with a Jeep Gladiator to get my 22 Tundra. The Gladiator prices are ridiculous with used being 5k north of new. They're actually more than the Tundra's which the logic of that escapes me

Oh I see the other drivers of inflation too, as you observe I’m not bringing them up because forum rules don’t allow discussions of the rabbit hole topic that cause those specific reasons.

Plus we’re both in the transportation industry I think, so we’re both painfully aware of how much the cost of fuel drives the cost of finished goods for example. That’s not something the average consumer has much control over outside of efforts to limit their own energy use which is easier said than done.

That still doesn’t account for dumb people blowing out their own personal budgets on buying vehicles they probably don’t need for way too much money, and housing they also probably don’t need for way way way too much money. I say that having observed very few broken down cars, leading me to think most people could keep driving their current rigs. Plus let’s face it, homeless folks aren’t the ones who have been taking out giant mortgages to buy real estate at inflated values.

    It's easy.

Tight funds...no problem. You need to find the new Tundra shiny. Buy it at 10-15k$ or more over MSRP because you need to show the world your purchasing prowess and just how much of a badass you are.

Show it off to your home boys, and enjoy the adulation. That will be fleeting.

Then the real world will hit hard........you have to make actual PAYMENTS.......and the INTEREST.....................

    Sobering?

    Something to think about?

Exact reason I didn’t spend 100k on a new Raptor, I have one on order at MSRP, but I’ll let it go as the money isn’t worth it at this point

The one I built is 80k which is a standard 801 trim, once you start adding options you’re between 85-90k

I see them here in Miami, pavement queens. Same goes for the Pros or TRX, etc. Miami has a particularly special group of people that prefer to live in an efficiency apt but drive a $80-100k vehicle. Hell we have catalytic thief’s stealing them in $60k BMW, I am not kidding either. Was on the news about a month ago.

There’re many street queens here in AZ as well it’s pretty funny to me, but I will say the Raptor is extremely comfortable and rides far better than the Tundra and I do miss that about my gen 2, call me crazy but I’m still enjoying my new rig despite giving up some comfort and capability.

It’s crazy how many catalytic converters are being stolen, we’ve seen it a lot in our area and I imagine it’s everywhere, I immediately bought a skid plate for my Tundra.

My Neighbor just got rid of his 2021 MGM Platinum…fully loaded with all options available for that year/trim.

He replaced it with a Dodge Ram (Diesel)…he said he was tired of 14MPG’s and is now getting 29 with his new truck.

Yup they will take a new car sell it to a salesman then buy it back because they can sell a used car for whatever they want and a new one Toyota caps the "adjustment", at least around here they do.

Used prices are crazy right now. Leased a 2019 Yaris for $307/month for a total of 39 months ($11,973). Bought it out at the end for $9070 (Total $21,043). Just sold it to a used lot for $19,750. In the end it only cost me $1,293 to drive that vehicle for a little over 3 years.....

Picking up my 23 Tundra tomorrow :bananadance:

how long is that going to take to break even? Engine upgrade cost for diesel motor/ loss at trade in, increase cost of diesel fuel, Maitenence, etc. Diesel is $2 more per gallon in Idaho (and surprisingly in New Orleans where I am for the holidays), with gas at $3 here that’s almost double the price for double the mileage, but add in def, filters, etc and that’s not breaking even.

I was looking at the 3L I6 Duramax and aside from GM issues (tons, esp with half tons), that's the same conclusion I reached. Sadly, all the additional emissions junk on diesels has transformed them from a super reliable, efficient, long living powerplant to a towing/ commercial use only option. Good new gas engines will probably last longer now, very sad to say.

My buddy has one and his wife had the Tahoe version. Gas mileage is awesome, but the Maitenence is a lot, plus they have both had issues and been in the shop a few times. His towing mpg isn’t that great at all and passing on the highway isn’t the experience that the tundra offers. That being said if I was going to buy any other truck it would be an AT4 or Denali with the mini diesel

Good question…I haven’t asked him what he got for it (and what deal he may have gotten on the RAM) but he does all his own maintenance so probably hoping to recoup something there to feel better about the transaction.

When my buddy went to the eco diesel is expenses actually ended up higher than with his old hemi.. the emissions crap and once it was out of warranty - the maintenance was miserable….

Yup.. I was originally looking at getting a turbodiesel suburban but a long bed pickup + cap is immensely cheaper, more capable, and more flexible with use cases, so if my needs change I'm still good with the vehicle I have. It sucks because I really like diesels. Oh well.

If for some bizarre reason I'm in a situation where everything in my truck is still good except the engine, I'll probably try and source a 12V Cummins and swap it in. That would be pretty cool, albeit a massive pita to do correctly.

Just don't pay a Ram eco diesel or Ram HD diesel.
Ram has so many lawsuits on the eco diesel, that this is the last year they are going to make them.
Ram HD diesel 2020-2023 have had so many fires that Ram, & NHTS said to the park them, until they can find a fix.

Ram truck should be cheap now.
