Definitely not unique to Tundras. Just sticking with Toyotas, the Prius and the Rav4 have been pushed out of the "cheap car for my kid" territory to nearly new car price levels. Its stupid. Look around at the Gen 3 Prius and you'll see a dated (albeit fuel efficient) ride pushing 20k+ in some cases.

Regarding the massive payments, I couldn't agree more. If you've got the spare change and want to do that, you do you. But a "typical" single income household with kids? Not in my budget.

So you can build a vehicle how you want these days and have the dealership just buy it back from you. This maybe a good crazy money making opportunity. :monocle:

To me, the number of used Rivian's are the most surprising. I've read where their initial quality has been...lacking.

Granted that was at the beginning of summer so...

Pretty sure they were gonna pass that expense on to someone else who was willing to pay it. We definitely have those types pf people around here.

Dealers or people closely working with them are buying them new at a reasonable cost, putting some miles on them then reselling at over msrp (even used) to capitalize market. That way they don’t look like they are gouging thieves by marking up from new/msrp.

“What we have here, is a 789 mile Tundra, better get it quick, it’ll be sold tmrw”
“Guy couldn’t afford it so we bought it back”

Initially there was a shortage but recently things are changing and now lot time is increasing slightly.
I don’t pay msrp and wouldn’t on a “used/previously titled to up charge” truck

That caught my eye too. My longer term planning was putting me in the market for the R1S (SUV version) but as I wait I see many competing brands finally entering that full size, 7 seat market so it looks like I’ll have more choices after all

The sad thing is all people had to do was not spend their COVID-19 stimy checks on stupid shit, and continue to live within their means. Instead most of them seem to have decided that cheap money would never end, and proceeded to spend money like a bunch of piss drunk sailors on shore leave. We could have avoided most of the inflation.

Now at least some of those dumb dumbs will get to experience being crushed by their own bad decisions. I have no sympathy for them as we head into a recession. I feel sorry for their kids I guess, having stupids for parents isn’t fair. I also feel bad for all the responsible adults out there who will also lose their jobs and suffer because idiots wanted to be idiots and effectively crashed the economy.

So thanks average idiot American consumer, thanks a lot for the economic disruption and pain you’ve bringing on yourselves and all the rest of us who do live within our means. Thanks for pissing on everyone’s near term financial goals and economic well being.

Very key pieces of inflation cause are being overlooked here. Not sure if it's because the nature of them could be deemed political, and you wish to avoid a 30 day ban, or if you are truly blind enough to think that consumers are causing the inflation.

I believe consumers play a part in all this. Like I have said before, I am no one to tell people how to spend their money, but. When you see vehicles at or above MSRP and believe that they will never ever be sold below MSRP, the you are just brainwashed. Same goes with the housing market. Same with the boating market. I just recently bought another boat. In my search I have seen so many boats on boat trader that have reductions or have been seating for months. Perfect example was the boat I bought. Sat for 6 months unsold. I came in at $8k lower than their asking, and it had already had a $3k reduction. They let it go. If you’re able to sell something for $10 all day long even though it’s not worth it, would you? That’s the mentality of rich people. If customers are willing to pay, why not. But the it all comes crashing down and people lose their ass. I have leased my last 2 trucks. This time around I will buy out my truck. Why, because I could care less about the new shiny toy that is going to cost me twice what I pay now. I refuse to play their games with my money, the government already plays enough with it.

I agree that buying things you cannot afford is stilly, and so is thinking of a depreciating consumable item like a vehicle as an asset. Sure. I was seeking clarification for his exclusion of guberment actions as causes of inflation. I was objecting to blaming the consumer for the inflation. Sure, everyone plays a part, because everyone works/lives/purchases within the economy, but playing a part and pulling the levers of power are very different things.

We definitely don’t pull the levers. Shit, we are the levers being pulled on. All we can do is minimize how much they pull on us.

Ok, then with that perspective, read the post that I quoted. It's a direct blaming of the consumer for inflation and the recession. That was what I was questioning/seeking clarification on.

We all have a part in it, I think. I just believe that the higher ups play us into these situations. We just keep playing their game. Someone has to stop playing for the game to end or you can’t afford to play anymore.
Not to go too deep into it but just like the $15 min wage. I saw the writing on the wall. They thought that they were going to get $15 and everything stay the same. Now $15 is like $8, again.
I stop playing. I don’t need the latest shiny new truck, boat, house, etc to define my life. I much prefer to enjoy my boat instead of it sitting because the payment is to high or having house parties because my mortgage is low.

Even if we stop playing, they will keep increasing spending and in order to cover it they will create money. This devalues what already exists, and is a hidden theft. As they create more it devalues what we save, the same as if they simply took it directly from our bank accounts and 401ks.

Rivian is bought by people "wanting to stand out buying something different". Moment they see a 2nd one on the road they sell it. Not likely a quality problem but the type of person that would buy one.

Like all the folks that but Masserati sedans because S class or 7 series is too common. Nothing to do with the Massi being a better car. Just rarer to stand out

Very true. Luckily, if you want to call it that, we have people who keep playing no matter the odds. Kinda like a gambling addiction. It helps to not get to the point that you described.
But remember this, history repeats itself and all great empires/nations/governments have fallen. Best we can do is enjoy it while it last.

Why does everyone skirt around the elephant in the room? Funnily enough it could even be deemed on topic. It doesn't take an economics degree to know that the global (and by association, national and local) economy is driven by oil. How many oil companies are stagnating at the moment or recording losses while everyone else is expected to tighten their belts?

This is why things are not discussed. https://www.tundras.com/threads/tundras-com-code-of-conduct.26081/ Specifically the bit copied below:

Political discussion, talk or displays of reckless driving, street racing and excessive speeding are also not permitted here. Posting links or information for the purpose of pirating or illegally obtaining products is also prohibited.

Any political discussion or images will result in a 30-day ban from the site.
(Pictures, MEMES, GIFs, or comments of current seated politicians/content like FJB)

The discussion and refutation of your assertion would inevitably lead to politics, especially at a global scale. Suffice it to say that recession in one nation doesn't affect your chosen boogeyman (oil) because it is used in nearly every product globally, and even in it's use as fuel, one nation starving of it doesn't slow others consumption because they are not concerned with virtue signaling.

That's as good as I can do without getting into ban territory. If any mods read this and feel it is of a political nature, please remove it and inform me. I'll take a wider berth of these things, as I have no desire to skirt the rules, nor to take a 30 day vacation.

I typically move on from vehicles every two years, not because I have to I just like to try different vehicles, the way things are going I’m thinking of keeping this one longer as I may not be able to afford the next one, I’m happy with the price I paid not on the interest rate though

I must have missed something there, I merely want to point out that if the oil companies decide to increase dramatically their quarterly earnings, it raises the cost of gas which costs both the consumer more in transport of themselves and the goods they buy, ergo raising prices across the board. If Economics 101 is virtue signalling then I guess I should stick to pictures of puppies.

Again, I cannot clarify or refute that line of thinking without risking the realm of politics.

Suffice it to say, actions outside of the oil industry have had an impact. Oil companies didn't just "decide to increase dramatically their quarterly earnings" as you imply.

You are correct there. I should have said that OPEC's strangehold on oil output has dramatically raised costs across the board and by chance of good fortune at the same time raked in record profits. Good for them and possibly their investors.

True, but their stranglehold was broken just few years ago. It was recently handed back to them in an act of virtue signaling.
