I would tend to agree with you but check out Route 80 and Route 95 in the northeast. A manual doesn’t stop many commercial truck drivers from doing it. In their defense though many do use a proper headset.

This reply is not directed at any individual member of this community:

People complained when standard shoulder seat belts came in.
People complained when larger headrests came in.
People complained when ABS came in.
People complained when airbags came in.
People complained when stability control came in.
People complained when rear view cameras came in.
People complained when radar cruise came in.
People complained when blind spot monitors came in.

Across the spectrum of vehicles in North America, all of the above saved lives and money. Are they perfect? Nope. But in general they all work.

And now people complain about active collision avoidance systems. Too many gizmos! I am a better driver than some camera! I don't want to pay to have all those alarms buzzing and I do not want my vehicle braking or steering for me ever!

Vehicle modifications aside, those alarms are going off constantly for many people because they actually suck at driving and they hate being called out on it by a computer. Unfortunately those people are the ones that need this technology the most to protect the rest of us.

It has nothing to do with age or getting older. It’s a frame of mind in which one is resistant to change and can not grasp that life and society evolves with innovation.

    Sorry, but it is crap.
The car either drives itself or it doesn't. Tesla seems to be almost there, but still has a long way to go at the same time.
A bunch of "safety" stuff lulling you to sleep isn't making you any safer.
Modern restraints and build quality that actually protects the occupants when a collision occurs is what saves lives.

If it is like my girlfriends new CRV, it would absolutely be a dealbreaker for me if you can't turn it off. It is constantly beeping at you to brake, doesn't like your lane change, those are the worst, and constant.
I had a VW rental car in Europe that would beep every 5-10 minutes about "it detects driver is tired, take a break" or something. Doesn't matter if you've been driving 5 minutes, 5 hours, day, night, sunglasses, no glasses... beep beep beep.

Absolutely annoying as hell, and distracting since until it becomes tuned out background noise, you are trying to figure out what the warning is about while you should be driving.
I flat out will never own a car that does this. It will be disabled via button or more aggressive means, or I will own older cars forever I guess.

That’s fine, your entitled to your opinion and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, I don’t see it as “crap”. The fast approaching alert has save many in my family and also myself just yesterday. Cruising the interstate at 75-80 and glanced down at the instrument cluster when the loud beeps went off aLetting me that traffic suddenly stopped. The alert save me and allowed me to stop in time. The BSM is also very useful. So, I would not broadly call the tech crap because your annoyed with it.

So what's going to happen when you get in a car that doesn't beep at you when traffic is slowing down, and are we all safer or less safe as a result?
I'm not attacking you in particular, but this is an absolutely perfect example of exactly what I'm talking about. Training drivers that paying attention is optional when they are still actually the driver is not doing anyone any good.

If the driver can nap in the back seat, that is useful, sign me up. Until then...

By that argument we should do away with airbags and seat belts too. If you are always in complete control then you shouldn't need a seat belt, right?

I both respectfully agree and disagree.

I agree that modern restraints and build quality saves lives. You are absolutely correct and the engineering has become simply brilliant.

I disagree with the context of the statement in this way: preventing a collision from every happening is always significantly better solution. 14% less lane change collisions. 23% less lane change collisions injuries. 27% less rear end collisions. 22% less reverse collisions. Those number are easy to validate with a few Google searches.

But you are right. Some people rely on the technology and lose respect for the road. Just like when ABS came out and some people thought they could drive faster in the snow, some people rely on the tech and think they can drive with less care. But as mentioned before, people can be idiots and need to be training on how to use the technology.

I think one of the good things people are missing here is that all the new safety devices that bring up the purchase cost also bring down the cost of your insurance.

I priced out both a new Taco and Tundra a few months back and they're cheaper than my insurance on my 02 Tundra by a few hundred bucks. (unless that's just the state of MA screwing me over...lol)

I mean... I wasn't there, but if myself and everyone in my family was often being saved by a beep telling me to brake, I'd probably start looking at why that is.

Why did you buy the truck if you can’t stand the features? That’s on you. You’re bitching about features that Toyota utilizes but still pulled the trigger.
Trade it in and get that sweet ass Chevy and move on with life.

    1. I never said any of that... I think you are confusing me for someone else
    2. If I were perfect like you and able to pay 100% attention at all times and anticipate the other idiots on the road then I would be annoyed by it too, but since I'm not I pay attention the best I can and let the technology assist me for the times when I'm not perfect... That is why they call it driver "assistance" tech

Your argument is flawed. These safety features do not “teach” me to not pay attention. But life happens and unexpected events occur beyond our control. This tech aids in those unexpected events. Heck, the BSM is priceless. Yes, I glance over shoulder every time before changing lanes. I also verify that a vehicle is not truly in that blind spot with the BSM. Sorry man, but IMHO, it’s a weak argument.

    Ah yes I was, sorry.

As far as the training goes, I think human nature says otherwise.
BSM... I don't care for it either although it is at least only annoying at night; during the day I don't see the light blinking unless I look right at it. :)

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Easiest way is to not buy it in the first place.

Sounds like the new truck isn’t for you, and Toyota doesn’t care because customers who want crank windows, no tech, no driver aids, and minimal options or creature comforts represent less than 1% of their take rate. I doubt Toyota can justify offering models with equipment essentially removed, complicating production. Toyota probably wouldn’t even be able to offer a lower price on a handful of stripped out trucks because the extra production ass pain for them would cost as much as the removed equipment.

If you’re looking for a fleet spec work truck look to GM, Ford, or Ram. My employer buys plenty of 3/4 ton and 1 ton gassers, usually Ford or GM for track inspectors, signal maintainers and any other guys who don’t need a boom built in requiring a class 8 vocational truck. Those basic work trucks BNSF is buying today are pretty well equipped for a work truck, but don’t have parking sensors, or a bunch of superfluous options. I would compare today’s basic work truck to a mid grade truck of 15 years ago. About where you want to be.

You're right - that was a barf of seemingly random numbers. Fair comment. Those are all USA based stats coming from Insurance providers comparing vehicles with and without collision avoidance technology including lane assist, blind spot monitoring, rear traffic avoidance and emergency braking. Directionally the number show that vehicles with the technology are avoiding accidents and when they do occur the accidents are less serious. But admittedly the data is coming from Insurance companies so there may be some confirmation bias in them.

I agree with this. But, one thing I’ll never understand and never will no matter how many people tell me it’s the correct way is looking over your shoulder to change lanes. To me, that is a split second or two where shit could go south in front of you. My belief is setting your mirrors properly (which 99 percent of people don’t) and keep your head scanning mirror to front.
Truckers, truck bed camper and big loads do not have the ability to look over the shoulder.
I know this wasn’t the point and I’m not trying to hijack. I do agree with you completely and welcome the safety tech.
Anyone that says they are engaged 100 percent of the time are completely full of shit.
