    My dad stopped smoking when he was watching my grandfather dying of lung cancer. He was literal on his death bed gasping for air like a fish out of water and it tore my dad up so bad to watch a love one suffer that he quit right then and there and he was a 3 pack a day guy. Keep it up you will be glad you did.

    In the early 1960s my compadre started smoking cigarettes at age 12 ~ he wanted to be cool like the big kids.
    He quickly became addicted and whenever the subject of quitting came up as a topic of conversation he'd say;

    "Quitting smoking is really easy ~ I've done it 4 or 5 times already !"

    And he was as serious as a heart attack.

    Hey, if it was easy then everybody'd be doing it . . .

    My dad's #1 excuse comes from a friend of his whose doctor said if he stopped smoking and his lungs cleared up it would leave him vulnerable to infection and that the tar was keeping that from happening. Anyone ever heard of this? Between he and my mom they spend $300mo on cigarettes and have the nerve to ask me where they can cut expenses so they are not short every month on their fixed income. I love my parents but they have been bowing to the nicotine god far too long.

    I'm sure there may be a very small shred of truth in that but it sounds mostly ridiculous to me.

    I have trouble believing that any reputable doctor actually said that. It sounds more like a story passed from addict to addict.
