I can’t help you in that one but it is different than my 17. It also appears not be be plastic which comes stock normally. They make an OEM aluminum but that doesn’t look like it either. If you’re leaking it could be the gasket placement which is critical or either to loose or to tight. I believe the specs are 18 ft lbs on the filter housing and 9 on the cap.

If it's the same noise that has been reported and asked about frequently starting back since 2007 when the second gens came out with the 5.7... then unfortunately I would have to say yes. Mine does it, iv had people ride along and askif it was a diesel, seems the 5.7 is just a growly beast on an engine. I also have an extended warranty....so in the event something was to happen I feel warm and fuzzy. Until then I know what noises the truck/engine make and until those known noises change for the worse, i have no worries .

thnx for responding, I also bought an extended warranty for 3/36 that will replace almost everything.

apparently it's not just Toyota, when i test drove the new 1500 on Tuesday it sounded like it had a spun main bearing when i started it, i told the service manager and he said that was normal, it was the fuel injectors......

Thanks to the OP for the post.... I've been struggling for a year now to figure out the noise my truck is making and it is identical to yours. Mine is a 2010 with 226k Kms(141k Miles)
Exact same noise... runs fine for a couple mins then noise starts... cycling clicking noise(only at idle), then goes away after 3-4 mins when truck is up to temp. Dealer couldn't diagnose and nobody could give me a straight answer... I suspected it was a tensioner.. but could never find hard proof until this thread.
Unfortunately I have no warranty left so I'm gonna eat a hefty bill... but I love this truck and it's worth it... Just called toyota for a quote and I'll update with cost.

I’m having my tensioners and guides replaced this coming Thursday, was quoted right at $3000 to have it done. Glad I found this thread to finally help me pinpoint my problem, having the work done a week before I leave for a 2500+ mile road trip

Well shit... I'm a little above 140k on my '12 platinum - well out of warranty. Been hearing this exact sound for the last couple months... Couldn't pinpoint it but had a feeling it was the tensioner.... Wonder what parts woyld cost to do this work myself? And is that even a good idea?.... Thoughts?

I have the same noise going on with my 2014 Tundra I was told by the dealer in Whitehorse Yukon that it’s a timing chain issue they are going to replace all under warranty.

Hey I’m new to the site , I have a 2011 Tundra Trd that has the same noise as yours. I read the thread and was wondering how you made out with repairs done by the dealership.

back in the day i re-built an 88 Suba Gl Turb Wagon. "theWhiteSleepa" she was a bad bitch. But threw an old SUbaru forum , i was lucky to have had the help from an old timer from the navy , he was a Turbo Specialist , dude was the real deal . Over the freaking phone , a land line mind u. the dude was able to tell me what injectors were bad , cam noises , lifters , etc by me placing the long driver onto certain spots and holding it to the f-ing receiver . i was a young grom at the time and it was my 1st engine "build" , my mind was blown . the dude was so legit.
but since then , the long driver stays in the truck. So i can just listen to things .. lol .. like a stethoscope :laser:

I Have the exact same noise as the video in the op. Truck currently has about 152000 miles and the noise started at around 150000. Definitely worried and have no idea what it could be reading through this entire thread. Most annoying part of it is probably op and the other couple of people in this thread who also had this issue and never reported back...

Lol. Maybe why the op and the couple of other people who had the same problem and never reported back were too embarrassed to. So in my case, I could hear the same sound coming from the video in the op from the cabin. At first I thought it was just the dashboard making noise as the temps have gotten quite chilly around here. As I left the ignition on and went inside a gas station, I could here the sound coming from where approximately the 5.7 badge is located and I popped the hood and could hear the sound even more clear and loud. As some might, I expected the worst and became quite worried. I was sure that it was coming from the engine bay from somewhere as the sound definitely was coming from there.

Well today as I was cold starting my truck and the sound was louder and lasted longer than ever (as mentioned in the op about 3-5 minutes), I got perturbed and was about to start ordering some parts for process of elimination. Before I got online and started throwing away $, I decided to look in the wheel well out of desperation; As strange as it sounds, the sound was there but not nearly as loud and clear like from under the hood. Being so sure and looking for any confirmation biases that it was coming from the under the hood, I didn't notice that one of the clips in the wheel well liner was not connected:

Put the clip back through the well liner and snapped it back in place and behold; No more noise!! I'll cold start the truck again tomorrow just to make sure that I got the bugaboo as the sound would only come on at cold start. If that wasn't the fix and just a freak coincidence, then I'll 100% come and report back to not leave anyone who may have had this problem hanging (present or future)

I’ve been cold starting without that rattling noise for three days straight now. Seems like that was indeed the source of the problem and was the best case scenario for a sound so daunting.
Looks like I have to replace the front passenger wheel well liner as two of the corners are ripped so the clips can’t go in them correctly. No noise but I can feel some heat dissipating from the liner. I looked on sparks parts but couldn’t find it. Anybody know the part number?

10k oil change, boss always said engine work not cheap oil is, clean oil = long engine life, I bought a 2012 toyota tundra with 172.5k on it from a ford dealer it has a tiny amout of timing chain noise when first started for 3 to 5 seconds after setting 10 to 12 hours the temp are below 30F is this normal?, I checked the vin on toyota website it had it's first 2 services done at the dealership after that it was back in at 169k for the air pump issue, I just wonder how it was treated, it was a company truck for a construction company that is the main contractor who subs the work to other contractorsit has some minor dings, other then that it runs great, it has the double cab with the 6' what ever bed, I hope it last me long enough to trade up in about 3 years.

Mine has been doing this. Sounds like a heat-shield is rattling, so hopefully that is all it is. I've seen a lot of other posts about this, and how it only happens on a cold start. I haven't done much digging around though. The oil looks new, and it should be. I would be super bummed if there's a big issue though. I'll do some digging around.

Ok so I had the same sound it was so bad my wife was sure it was a rod knocking. I even had someone ask me what year did toyota put a diesel in there trucks. All that said I used premium gas I tried barrymans additive. It helped but didnt last long.
With this last oil change i added 2 quarts of STP oil treatment and 6 quarts of oil. I run conventional oil 5000 mile changes.
Now I have run Lucas oil treatment in my truck from new and in every oil change and it never helped. The stp (blue bottlel is 2.88 walmart) has stop my knock dead. And has not returned they do offer a synthetic stp (I think it is a gold bottle). Try this might help you out It did me.

It comes and goes, it's only ever there during a cold start, and it quickly goes away. Could be getting something like a oil preloader (is that the correct term?) to put oil at the top of the engine for cold starts would make it go away too.
